Planning a trip in March - April 08 to the Yucatan, travelling fron England with a fellow fly fishing freind. Looking for advice on where we'd be best to stay, will be looking for guided fishing for 5-6 days with a few DIY days on top if the location allows it. Any suggestions of location, lodges/hotels and itinery?

From internet searches I keep being pointed towards Playa Blanca and Casa Blanca, they clearly have good relationships with the fly fishing tour operators whom spend the marjeting money on the internet. Are they as good as they say so? Do these places represent good value though?

Advice would be really appreciated.

I have been to Punta Allen (northern peninsula of Ascension Bay) a number of times and have been most impressed with the Palometa Club.

For more info, see my review on this page. I caught my first permit there last March, and I think Ascension Bay offers the best chance at one anywhere.

They survived the recent Hurricane, with a loss of beach from erosion. Road to Punta Allen was washed out in places, but regional governor has been very proactive in prioritizing its rebuilding.

Great food, comfortable lodging, and excellent guides. Have not stayed at Playa or Casa Blanca, but Palometa Club is fabulous. Time of year that you are looking at should be prime.

Enjoy!

Depends on what you want to target fish wise...the Yucatan is a BIG place. Bonefish, permit or tarpon ?? That would be the deciding factor on where to go... Let me know if you need some info. You can always PM me or just email.
