Now I am not sure if this is true or not, but I have recently received reports from an acquaintance that in Ascencion Bay (I have yet to fly fish Mexico) there are plenty of bones to be had in the 8-10 lb range. From what I understood before, the biggest fish generally found in that area of Mexico are about 5 lbs, 6 if you are lucky. Apparently, the trick is to tell your guide you want to go after the big fellows. The story goes that guides know where the big boys hide, but since they mostly hang around mangroves and in limited areas that tend to be isolated, they are extremely difficult to land once they are hooked. For that reason, guides don't take clients to them because less fish landed=less tip for most people. Has anybody heard about this? I frankly have difficulty believing it given the average 2-3 lb size of the fish there.
