I'm starting to think about a bonefish trip for 2008. Been to Andros the last two years and may want to try something different. Anyone been to Los Roques, Venezuela, and want to share their thoughts? Many thanks.

IMHO don't give up on Andros...when, where and with whom...specifically what guide for each day of fishing...i've been fishing andros for nearly 30 years but one thing I have learned is that andros is not any different than the keys...it's the guide..not the room...not the food...not not anything but the guide...would be happy to give you my opinions in PM

Andros As good as the keys? Heck, I think it's better! More bonefish, bigger bonefish, and the tarpon eat! But like Tarpon41 said, it all depends on the guide you have. Fish with Charlie, Frankie, or Barry Neymour and you will definitely not be upset. Andy Smith is also fantastic, and now that the Bang Bang club has reopened (and is spectacular from what I hear), you have the chance to stay at a lodge equidistant from the east and west sides of the island, which means no gas surcharge. I personally have fished with Charlie Neymour and now only wish to go to Andros for the rest of my trips. Los Roques can be fantastic from what I hear, but I would avoid the winter as cold fronts can absolutely ruin the fishing trip there. But seriously look deeper into Andros: it's cheap, easy to get to, and the fishing really is better than anywhere else in the world.

MY .02 on Venezuela is I would not put a penny into the country or do I buy gas from 7-11. Andros is closer and cheaper to get to, I would not call Andros cheap but you have better chances at double digit fish.

My advice is go to Los Roques!
I've been 3 times. I'm heading back there in November for a 4th (currently backpacking down through Central America - already fished Accenssion Bay and Caye Caulker and Glovers Atol).

Its cheap if you camp. And by camping on Crasqui you get access to the beaches really early in the morning!
Camping on the beaches is free but there are no facilities. But then you get to fish some of the far islands early/late in the day. I've also found that there is a lot of fishing there without a guide.

The last time I went was in November 2004 and the bonefishing wasn't great but there were loads of jacks, bonito and tarpon about. Catching bonito from the beach was great!

As for the country itself - what a fantastic place! Great people - really friendly and helpful.

Take a look at some of the photos from my trips

weird. I just posted a message on a different site with the exact same title. I was inquiring about whether it was possible to do a super budget trip to Los Roques. I am going to be in Guyana for a couple weeks and was hoping to do some bonefishing on my way back to Canada. I actually found some info on reasonable accommodation on Crasqui, but I still haven't seen an official price on flights from Caracas to LR (from Georgetown to Caracus would be even better, but highly unlikely). Anyone got info on flights and prices?

Thanks,

Mike
