What a difference a day makes. From the reports yesterday, all was great!!
Today, well, we saw some :p We left plymouth at 6:30 and headed across the
bay to the SWC and northward. Out of about 50 boats we saw one fish caught
by a small kid, that was great. We saw some schools but no joy. We'd troll
past them, cast into them nothing. 2 other boats from the marina in Plymouth
did just as well. One is a well know charter captain.
The good part though was we gave up on the tuna at around 10:30 and went
bottom fishing. It was quite good... A couple hours we landed about 175lbs
of keeper cod and haddock. The dogs weren't even too bad. The other 2
boats went bass fishing. Except for one of them and a couple bluefish
it was real poor.
Well I guess ther's always next weekend.

Was out at the SWC corner also....lots of whales and birds! Had a couple of shots at busting pods but nothing. There was chatter of boats getting lucky but we didn't see any. Tried jigging with Butterfly jigs and caught nothing but Dogfish. We headed out of Boston and there was absolutely no life until we were about 3 miles from the bank. Traveled about 130 miles round trip for not mutch to show for it. Nice day though!

We headed out of Plymouth as well around 5:00 am. and headed straight over to SWC. We started closer to shore and had the same experience. We saw scattered small pods of porpoising fish that were uncatchable. The chatter on the radio was the same many surfacing fish but no hookups. Finally around 3:00 pm. with the seas building we started in towards RP and then the ramp and ran into a nice pod of crashing fish. Made the money cast and got bit immediately, the fish came unbuttoned 2 secs later only to have the popper smashed while it was still submerged. This fish I set the hook hard on 2-3 times. Then it was an up and down battle for 45 mins. in 150 ft. of water. I finally got it close enough to gaff and we finally had my first big BFT in the boat. I really wanted to get one on the big flyrod but the fish today were just not happy enough to get any legit shots at with the fly gear. Awesome fish to say the least and it surprised me with it's stubbornness and power. Saw a bunch of dolphins on the way back to Plymouth in solid 4-6 ft. seas.

To be fair, there was one legit fly shot that I flailed on (&*@#&^%@ eel grass!!!).
Thanks for a fun day.

I was the captain on the boat where you saw the kid get his.......we were putting the hammer down on fish with the jigs. The jigs REALLY work even though this is the first week we have been trying them and still have a lot to learn........

Duffy,
We also jigged quite a lot on Saturday without any success. I have been out 4 times now and everytime someone on the boat has hooked and landed fish on the butterfly jigs just not me. We didn't hang around long at SWC as we were not marking any fish but I did get a few doggies while jigging.--126-3-Jigging is deadly effective and you really have to get the hang of the vertical presentation, the action of the jig is really on the upstroke not the drop as you would think with a diamond jig. Try dropping just enough to still see the jig and make long quick sweeps with the rod and then watch the jigs action. It will dart all over the place on the upstroke and just veer off to one side or the other on the fall. I am sure you already know this but I thought it was worth mentioning in case you were not aware of the correct presentation.

DuffyD Congrats
If anyone is to catch fish it is always good to see a kid do it.
We tried throwing jigs at the schools with no luck. Also saw many others
jigging and only pulling up doggies. There were a few on the finder but not
many.
Weather permitting another try on Sun
