I've been had by these fish. Been trying for 2 years now and last year was a bust for sure, got my feet wet so they say.
Headed out of GH at 5 am and on the rods at sun up, hit a nice 51" to bring the season total to double digits!! Woohoo, cant believe it, last year could not tell you what they look like and now 10 - this is great Im thinking. then the unreal.
Around 1030 a hit and run like a mack truck, no slowing down, no head shakes - just the sweet sound of buzzzzzz.... 200 yards of mono gone, about 200 yards into the backing, we are running at it at 12kts and not making any ground. Finally it slows and we get some back, this contunues for 45 min and I havent seen the mono. After another 45 we get it to the boat, the thing was exausted - so was the crew. Quick lip gaff, tail whip, few cuts with the knife and we were done! Getting it into the boat is another stort - but it got done!

86" and est 397lb

I have been reading this forum for the past few years and must say, with out the intel shared, suggestions, passed around and made up I would be still spending money without catching any fish.

Sunday 9/23, OTW 6am. Little nasty but laid down nice around 11. Ended up 3-4 with 50" being the biggest. Pods starting to pop up (or at least now you could see them) and we took a few shots. Few swings but nothing... back at the dock at 2

Did you steak up the fish?? That is a large fish to cut up. My biggest this year was @ 150lbs and took awhile to cut up. What color did it hit? Congrats again on a nice fish!

Nice job; Congratulations on a job well done. How about some particulars on the tackle, lure, etc.

Sounds like my experience last week, but with a very different ending

well done. It's always nice to know that mixed in with those 80 pound fish are beasts like that.

Details...
I have given up on the troll, fished 30 hours without a sight, hit or chance so the bars, chains, birds and hundreds of dollars of other "troll gear" is hanging in the basement - I dont even bother with putting the outriggers on the boat any longer. I jig - long days and sore arms but its working. Just about every color of flat-side and butterfly jigs are hot - its all in how you keep them moving. Lately glow in the dark is what I start with, low light and charge that puppy up - drop and fish the marks. As the day gets brighter I switch to the pinks, browns and blues - all have produced. 5-12oz, does not matter.
This puppy was on a 5 oz glow in the dark, 80' of water. 30 class Shimano Tiagra on a 30-50 lb Tsumani boat rod, yes gets a little heavy but having a crew of 4 helps keep the action on and also gives the arms a rest!

If dogs are producing I move 100 yards, if blues and bass are hitting I stay - retie knots and replace a lot of hooks, making sure Im good to go when I need them to be.

Heading out this weekend - action has been too hot and there are no leaves to rake yet.

WOW! 397lbs jigging on the Tsunami 30 - 50 lb rod with a 30lb Tiagra, thats outstanding!! Too bad it wasnt in front of a million dollar boat with 6 130's with bent butt rods set up! I havent trolled my last 3 trips out and have landed the more fish than all previous trips combined! Figures after I invested a bunch of money in squid bars, sideriggers etc, etc. oh well, I figure the stuff wont go bad if I don't use it much!

good job on the fish!

Jig is still hot - 1-3 on Sunday, 47" in the box
Tried spinning gear with a jig and well lets just say wow.... a friend hooked into something, first time I have seen a run on spinning gear and it was cool. 30 seconds and not slowing down, got the boat going and started to chase. Snap is all I hear, look back and gone. The braid ate into the spool and jamed, done! There may have been a little palming action in there but still cant get an answer... wonder where he got that idea!

Heading out this weekend if the weather holds - 68 Corneroffice
