I'm going to be staying at Palladium Vallarta (20 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta proper) on Bandares Bay during the second week of November

We're planning on chartering a boat with Hector from PV Fishing for some bluewater fly fishing. Hopeing to get into a billfish or Mahi on the fly.

Aside from offshore fishing are there any shore fly fishing possibilities? Thinking about taking my 9wt single hand rod and possiblity a spey rod for bombing out major overhead casts with heavy sinktips.

Comments appreciated.

Check out this link http://vallartafish.8m.com/, lots of good info & if you e-mail Phil he'll fill you in on local conditions. It's been a couple of years since I was there & I know there's been some major road construction north of the Palladium (great hotel BTW) & possibly some development of Careyeros beach. It used to be a beautiful pristine beach but I suspect that has all changed now. I'll be there at the end of January so I'll be curious to see how things have changed, I suspect not for the better.
Fishing from the beach there can be hit or miss & you may have trouble getting the distance you need with a fly rod. However there are small jacks in the surf that can be entertaining on light gear but to target the bigger ones, & roosters, you'll need to get past the first surf break. There are some coves to the north of the resort that are fishable but you'll have to wait for a low tide to get around to them. There's also a dirt road that goes north from the resort to a beach called Playa Paraiso Escondido, ask at the resort for directions. You'll need a mountain bike or some form of transport to get there though as it's a bit of a hike. You can access it from the ocean side too by walking along the shore but again, it's a bit of a hike. There's also a major beach just before you get to the Palladium, can't recall the name right now, that's popular with the locals on the weekends. The south end of that beach terminates in some secluded coves that hold fish & I've also been told that this area holds roosters but I don't have any hands on experience of the prescence of the said roosters. Buena suerte & PM me if you want more info & pictures.

I was there in March a few yrs ago. I hired a local guide who took me to punta mita. There were tons of bonito tearing up the surface. It looked like an albie run in east coast minus hundreds of fisherman.

I hired a bonehead guide there in '04. But, did get into roosters behind the Playa Grande resort. The guides congregated there and did a drifting rotation of the hot spot. I was wishing I had stayed at Playa Grande, instead of the new resort I was in on the Pacific side (Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach), because I could have easily fished the same spot from the beach behind Playa Grande at my leisure, minus the cost of the bonehead guide.
