Planning a trip this weekend to Montauk island for some fly fishing and surf casting. Flying into the General Aviation airport right on the beach.

How has the action been in this area?

Can anyone recommend some key flies that I should have for fly fishing if I'm going after Albies or Stripers from the beach? Any prime locations would be helpful too as I have never fished this area before.

Thanks for the info.

Search these threads and you should find plenty of info regading Montauk.

Here's one just on the next page that dealt with Permits which are not required to walk on any beach out there.

I gather your flying into the airport on East Lake Drive. Without a car, your only choice would be to walk north until you come to the water. Maybe 1 mile. You can fish Gin Beach, Shagwong and Shagwong Point itself. There's also a jetty there on the end of East Lake Drive. Blues, Stripers and Albies will run along that strech at times. Prevelent bait could be peanut bunker, sand eels, and bay anchovies. If you can catch a ride, try the area around the lighthouse as well. These usually fish more consistent. Good luck.

I used to fly into Fisher's Island and fish the surf (their south side) by walking to the beach from the tie down at the airport. Its a very short walk. The beach there consists of boulders mixed with sand and is a very interesting because of the southern exposure and the surf. Never did anything, but also only fished it once or twice with my plugging gear. That area looks extremely "fishy" as it also is not far from the Race..... Could also be a good spot for you to investigate.....good luck.

I Love Fishers Island!!! Your landing spot is just a bit west of one of my favorite spots that has given up many Large Bass over the years, Howie you should fly over there again and fish it hard as this area is plain awesome to say the least. I have watched guy's on the rocks early morning just bailing fish one after the other on the flyrods.

My days of flying are far gone. Sold the plane shortly after I moved to Long Island from the Catskills in 92. Had a simple Cessna 172 (four seater). Used to fly to the Vineyard from Woodstock NY during the late 70s and 80s. The Vineyard was always my destination. Used to fly around the whole island looking for birds and bait before landing. Favorite fall place was Squibnocket. But on a few occasions I landed at Fishers to just throw a few plugs. Would take less than an hour from the Kingston airport to get there and was a nice flight over the Connecticut shores out to Fishers.

That spot always looked very fishy....but I never timed it for fishing....but rather it was timed to my flying schedule and weather. So I used to wind up there in the middle of a bright and sunny day. Great for flying, terrible for fishing. But it always looked like very productive water.....much better than gin beach at any given time. Gin beach is a place where fish move into or through depending upon the bait. Dont think there are resident fish there. But the beach on Fishers for sure holds resident bass....as it is filled with structure, like the south side of Montauk.
