Early this mornng on Stellwagen, trolling a little south of the corner, I see what appears to be three or four boats all together, like, touching each other. hmm, that's weird, but didn't give it much more thought .
Soon afterward a guy gets on the radio and explains.
He's watching a new arrival to the fleet running wide open , he appears to be heading right at another boat , the guy thinks,"wow he's going to run over that guys spread" to his surprise, he watches as the guy RUNS RIGHT OVER THE OTHER BOATS COCKPIT !! the guy telling the story runs over in disbelief.
the victim IS IN THE WATER trying to get back on his boat. the motor, cockpit, and all his fishing gear are trashed, but thankfully the guy was alright.
Now, how the hell can you run wide open into a fleet of boats and NOT BE LOOKING WHERE YOUR GOING.!! WHAT AN IDIOT.
What I got to thinking about is , with liability insurance on the idiots boat doubtfull, who's going to pay for the damage to this poor dudes boat and gear?
Guess that about wraps up his season. keep your eyes open guys, they're out there!

I would image the coast guard would like to talk to the guy in the wide open boat.

the coast guard came to provide aid after the accident. I wasnt there when it happened but came a bit afterwards. the guy who helped the guy who got knocked out of the boat explained it to another guy over the radio. the guy was fishing nearby and came over to help the guy who got knocked out of the boat. i heard the same description as northcoast, basicallt the boat just ran right up on the other one full speed. That guy is lucky he wasnt killed.
there was big CG boat a bit east of the NWC, looked like there was a smaller boat with a few CG guys talking to some folks in about 3 boats. I can only imagine they were getting statments.
having heard it described by a witness, I cant figure how the accident could have happened. seems like someone wasnt paying attention, to say the least.
funny how we all have to take tests to get our drivers license, but anyone can buy a boat, which dosent have brakes, and drive on the ocean, where there are no speed controls or dividing lines to say who has the right of way. I would be all for mandatory boat driving tests and boat licenses, with suspensions/revokations simillar to what we have with cars.
also, there was another boat collision down off nahant, this one involving three boats. dont know the details.

heard it all on the radio this morning myself.
regardless of your knowledge of the rules (COLREGS), you're responsible to follow them. ignorance won't cut it. ultimately, neither vessel can be found 100% at fault under the rules of the road, however one will be found to hold 90-something percent fault---unless it is a super rare collision case where one vessel did NOTHING wrong or couldnt have done ANYTHING to avoid the collision. that would be impossible to prove at that location under those conditions, on vessels of that size and menuverability.
more or less according to the colregs the boat that was struck could be MORE at fault should they have been the burdened vessel in that situation.
i heard a mako, grady, and no idea what else involved. i was confused because one guy was hailing station gloucester, then the lat/lon was off nahant, then the guy said "no, i'm on stellwagen" so it sounds like one big cluster....f-word. i almost got run over by a guy towing a wakeboarder in salem harbor behind a 30' searay type boat. that take blitz-crashing to a new level.

Anybody else see the Kayaks on the SW corner Saturday? Looked like they were paddling from the Middle Bank toward P-town. Talk about nuts.

hey tuna on a kayak sounds awesome. They probably got dropped off by a larger boat that was fishing nearby. Ive definitely considered tyring it.

You may want to rethink that once you see the fine:
Violation per Atlantic Tunas Convention Act of 1975: Fishing with a vessel not able to travel to and from the grounds and from which tuna cannot br brought under control without help. First violation, $1,000-$20,000 fine

Ok. So maybe not legally a good idea, but I bet it would be a helluva ride!!!!!

Some guys register their yaks to be in compliance with the law. They don't make it easy for yakkers to comply with the law.
I was on another board members boat and saw the yakers out there also. I don't mind a little adventure but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't see me that far off shore in or on a man powered craft (unless I was waiting to be rescued).

I read about the paddle guys on a yak board- it was a 13+ hour trip from Cape Ann to Race Point!!
Sounded like this was a group of pretty experienced and prepared guys who've done a lot of open ocean touring.
Absolutely not for me, but this seems a lot tamer than those guys who sail around the world solo, or try to row across the Atlantic.....
I ran into them about 9:00am about 5 miles west and 7 miles south of the NWC. I couldn't believe my eyes so I went over there for confirmation. They told me they have been planning the trip for a while and have been watching the the weather...couldn't have picked a better day.
They seemed to be pretty experienced and probably have better electronics than I have. Even I can sit on my ass for that long...
