I am taking the family to Long Island and staying at the Stella Maris resort at the end of March for a week. Has anyone been there that could comment on the fishing?

I have fished at Deep Water Cay on Grand Bahama and Kamalame Cay on Andros and would like to know how this will compare. It sounds like the bones might be smaller, but that there is a shot at Permit at one of the distant cays.

Thanks and any fly suggestions would be appreciated.

Best,

T-Bro,
I spent 2 weeks on Long I, in April two years ago. 4 of our days were at Stella Maris, but to dive, not fish.
I did fish out of Deadman's Caye (about a 45 min drive S of Stella Maris) with a very good, pleasant guide. The flats we reached by boat were astounding to me. I have not fished Andros, but several other Bahamas Islands, and have not seen flats so big before. The bones were 3-maybe 6 at the most that I got. Some flats are great to wade.
Kept hearing reports of flats fishing right near Stella Maris (I think called Columbus Cove) but did not break out a rod there. Several other Reel-Time guys have fished there. There is one very well known guide there whose name escapes me right now. Suspect his name and contact info is on their website. While we were there, he seemed to be getting his dudes bonefish. I know nothing about Permit around Long Island.
If you dive, we were very pleasantly surprised at the quality of diving out of Stella Maris.

Thanks for the reply. We have rented two homes for our two families at Stella and have a couple of days booked with Docky Smith, and weather permitting, we should go to Deadman's for one of the days. I think that is where the permit can be found occasionally.

Any comments on the resort and the food? We are not divers, but I think we can get everyone out snorkeling. I imagine the reefs are dazzling.

Thanks,

Todd

Hello:
I have fished Long Island during christmas the last 2 years. In the two weeks of fishing last year, we ran into several larger bones up to 12 pounds in the boat. We fish with Eagle Eyes guide service which is just north of Stella and we love it. We would return this year but instead are heading to Mayaguana.
Great flats, Ken is a great guide, great boat.

Stayed there a couple of years back and had a great time. Fished with Docky Smith. Very good experience. Check out his website.

Great beaches south of stella Maris resort on the east side to explore. There was a wrecked freighter up on the rocks at one beach which we were able to climb up on. Also Columbus point at the northern tip is a spectacular place.
