View Full Version : east of chatham
I'm planning on heading east of Chatham on Wed, if the weather is good. Haven't been out there since July, were we didn't get a tuna on any of the 3 trips. Has anyone been out east lately? I figured to hit the normal areas anyway, BC , crab ledge, regal sword. Porbably not all 3. My gas tank would appreciate any help on selecting an area. Thanks

I'm planning to be out there as well on Wednesday. I heard a report of a 90 pounder from a buddy of mine a week ago Monday at the Sword. I have had luck this year in July and August about 15 miles east of the Monomoy tip but was skunked in September.
I will be on the radio on Ch 78. The boat name is Surreel and my name is Al
I look forward to sharing info out there on Wednesday. Good luck!
I plan to hit the water at 5am from Hyannis so I should be there around 6:30am or so.
It's a big area and gas is expensive. I have no issues sharing the knowledge while on the water. Just give me a shout!
Al
thanks for the info. We will be launching out of Saquatuket? harbor. Not sure what time, maybe a little later than you. Is it critical to be set up at first light? I need a boat name, just hail Lou. I was thinking of hitting the tip of monomoy and just heading east.

I don't think it's critical to be there at first light but it can't hurt. I also say 5am but with the game on tonight and a few beers, I expect it will be a little later. Sunrise tomorrow is at 6:55am...
I usualy round the tip and then head just about 90 degress exactly. I start really looking for signs of life after 12 miles or so from the tip.
We'll talk in the morning.
If you want, send me a private message and we can exchange cellphone numbers as well?

I will be out there also responding to Skipjack on 68 & 78.
I would politely suggest that cell phone coverage 12-29 miles out is problematical at best.

OK, sounds good. Actualy my cellphone works better out there than it does at my house(#$119)
Talk to you tomorrow....

I was out there last week getting the snot kicked out of me in some big seas with rain. We caught one fish in 135 feet of water just off the ledge. There were bigger fish, looked like small giants, breaking in 185 feet of water a little further out off the ledge. The fish we got was on a black bar with white stinger. It was tough to keep the bars running right because the seas were so big. Fish was landed at 1115 so it didn't seem to be a first light only thing.

good forecast for wed., good luck. Might shoot for Thursday (it's a long way for me to get there with trailering and running around Monomoy - so post your results as soon as you can!)

Bring Ballyhoo!!!
The fish were definately there but Ballyhoo was the trick (of course I had none). Perhaps SkipJack can add to this? From the radio traffic, he hit the motherload.
The only excitement for our day was when we accidentally snagged an ocean Sunfish in the dorsel fin. He put on a great show...jumping completely out of the water three times. We were able to get him boatside and free the hook to release him unharmed....

we came back w/ 1 used ballyhoo, 1 used flying fish and a squid mantle.
We started with 6 ballyhoo; 3 flying fish and 2 squid.
We were 3 7/8 for 8 or 9; all strikes on meat. We only ran a single squid bar for 15 minutes, after the 1st hookup and subsequent one after the other strikes it was clear it was a meat only affair.

Larry,
How are you rigging the 'hoos on naked to swim and skip or are you pulling them with skirts or at the back of daisy chains?

Pink, Green and Red seawitches as well as a blue moldcraft mini chugger all got love.
I never run naked; even for white marlin.
We got nothing at the first spot. Moved out near the sword and laned 2 50" fish on a black spreader bar. Big surface feed for about 15 minutes, couldn't see what they were eating.

Congratulations Lou!
I'm glad to hear that you scored after that rough week we had back in August during our vacation.
Is that a wrap for you this season?
Kevin
P.S. I never did make that Mahi trip again this season. I plan to take 3 weeks of my vacation during the summer next year to give me a better shot at those green bullets south of MV.
