Hi Guy's
BillyD here. I'm thinking of getting my first soft shell clam hand rake.
Any of you out there know of a place in the NE-MA. or SE-NH where I can find a decent and reasonably priced rake?
I got the urge for some steamers a week ago and went to the local Shaws. (I live in Manchester,NH) Took some home cooked them up. Then proceeded to throw them in the trash (not fresh by any means) H'rumph! I'll dig my own from now on.
Thanks for any tips.

Google "Ribb Rakes". I got one a few seasons back and it is a dream come true. Excellent build, and just a ton of fun. They might be a little pricey, but once you buy one, you'll never need another. BobG pointed me that way. They are worth it.

Ribrakes are great for Quahogs, but not for softshell. Bob G put me onto them when I was on the Cape and there was none better but, they are illegal for softshell clams.

Billy,

You can probably find a softshell rake at SurfLand or Kittery Trading Post or Fisherman's Supply in Newington but I'd give them a call before you take the jaunt down there from central NH. Also, you will need to get a license from NH Div. Marine Fisheries to take soft shell clams. If you are going to dig in Mass. you need get a license from the town clerk of the town you will be digging in.

As for price, you will get what you pay for. There are cheap stamped iron rakes out there that you will spend more time unbending the tines than raking. Spend a little more and get a cast-iron rake.
