Waited until about noon for the air temp to heat up, then headed out. Gannetts dive bombing everywhere on the southside but very spread out and not many fish on top but it looked like the diamond jig guys did better than us. We did have one group of small BFT, clearly seen launching themselves out of the water after 3-4 inch peanut bunker. We spent about 30 min trying to hook one but no luck. Eventually went west and found acres of gulls on bass right off the town beaches. We ended up with 3 stripers, largest was 27 inches and 2 huge fat blues around 15lbs. Starting to thaw out after about one hour.....may give it one last shot tomorrow as it is supposed to be warmer.

I was out there too--probably the coldest day I've ever fished! It was frustrating to see the diving gannets but without the bass up top. Someone told me to head west and wished I had taken their advice but I didn't have that much time, so I headed back skunked. I heard there have been schools all along the beaches from the point to E. Hampton. I am hoping the big schools of herring and big bass are not yet here in force.
Man was it c-c-c-old.

West was the right call. My wife chose Saturday to come fishing. She still hasn't spoken to me. She did catch one with stripes over 20#'s. Tuna were busting all over, some were quite large!!!! Make sure you know the season and have a license for your boat.

I took the kids out with Jim Hull on Friday. Cold and windy. Jim wanted to get tuna and we searched around. I thought the kids would mug me when we back, but we decided to fish for bass and hit them big time. Lots of good size bass and blues. http://coastalflyrodders.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=98 I think the forgave me after that. Its amazing how your brain shuts off cold when you get fish.
We also hit the beaches of Amagansett and there were bluefish and bass in the surf. Nothing on Saturday though, but we only fished the morning.
I was out on Wednesday and it was great. Tons of bass and great size too. We had lots of fish 15-22 lbs. along with lots of schoolies and a few 12 to 15 lb. blues. Unlike the weekend -- where the reports seem to say it was all south side and way west -- the fish were mainly on the north side from Gin Beach and Shag, to under the light and around to off Browns and Kings.
