Anyone have any advice on where to stay on Tortola?
I don't know who to believe on travel forums so thought I'd ask here. The husband will probably bring gear but we are mostly looking for a warm mid winter vacation away from cell phones and lap tops.
Any ideas on resorts or hotels?
thanks in advance
It's been many years, but we stayed at Frenchman's Cay and enjoyed it there. They had a package deal that gave you a car and some of your meals. They have about a dozen villas there. It was pretty quiet while we were there, but our visit coincided with an airline strike, we were the last flight to get there, and most of the people who had reservations couldn't get there; I imagine it would be a little busier with all the villas full.

Check out Peter Island. Peter Island is a short ferry ride to Tortola too. Its pricey though, but really nice. I have a contact here if you'd like it.

I'd bag Tortola entirely and get over to Jost or even better Anegada.

There are many different types of places to stay on Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Never stayed on VG but stayed at two places on Tortola and spent a lot of time on Anegada. Not going to reccomend either one, its been 4 years, but I would stay at either again after doing a little more research.
Stayed at Long Beach Resort, Tortola the first time down. It was kinda a second honeymoon and fishing was not a priority. Nice place, you can get all inclusive and different options on rooms or cottages right on the beach. Not as fancy or expensive as the resorts on VG but it was a good. Made a day trip to Anegada and did a little bonefishing and got hooked on Anegada so the next trips we made we spent more time on Anegada than Tortola.
On those trips we stayed at Beef Island Guest House on Beef Island near the airport. Nothing fancy, just a little 4 room place on the Trellis Bay with a common kitchen and living room. Its right on the water and there is a good restuarant right next door, Loose Mongoose, good food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Bar also with great rum drinks, I am told. It has more of a local flavor and is regularly visited by boaters staying in Trellis Bay. I also fished the upper end of the bay each morning catching a few bonefish. There are other places to fish on Beef Island also. We rented a small SUV at both places and we toured the islands each day.
On Anegada we stayed at Anegada Reef Hotel a number of times also. Nice place, great food, fishing is the best in BVI and 10+ miles of beautiful nearly deserted beaches just a short ride away.

I can vouch for Long Beach as well....again, it was more of a "Let's go somewhere alone before we start a family since we will never be able to do it again (joke)"- we had a sweet beach bungalow, and we hooked up with Ian Bachelor (mentioned in a post above). Good spot.

To agree with a previous poster there are many different types of accommodations on Tortola, and NONE of them are high rise/casino type resorts. If you want resorty, Long Bay is good. For a small hotel, Sebastions. If you are interested in an apartment or villa, check out Purple Pineapple.
