I am looking for a project boat, but not to big a project. Will consider any older glass hull in the 17-19' range. I would prefer something with a trailer. Do not need a motor but will consider if it is much newer than the hull attached.
Please PM with pictures and location to start.

I assume you're checking e-bay, boat-trader etc. Another good potential source is classicseacraft.com

There is a killer little Mako 17 with no motor on craigslist that would be awesome if rehabed and repowered with a little 4 stroke yammie or honda

At Hudson's in salisbury there is a sweet little yellow 20' seacraft that has been there for a few years just waiting to be scooped up. With some tlc and buffing it could be made into a real beaut. Was eyeing it for awhile but wanted something a bit bigger.

BDB, just how big a project are you looking for? Fluff & Buff, full gut and transom replacement, or re-wire and power ?

Loon,
in a perfect world Just a fluff and buff. In a near perfect world rewire, repower and some glass work. In a nightmare world complete gut and rebuild.
A boat someone has just given up on and but has the major work done would be possible. Completely gutting a boat is about equivalent to building a boat of equivalent size. I have built a couple of boats and it is all consuming time wise. Putting a motor on is easy compared to the other work involved in a project like this, so I was planning on it.

You will be doing yourself a big financial favor if you check in on the Craigslist sites a few times daily. I would look up the "for sale boats" within 100 miles of home, (or whatever you feel comfortable driving.)

Had not thought of it before but what is the general horse power requirement for 17-20' Mako, whalers and the like. doing a little research showed that commercial are running about 3-500 lbs heavier than a homebuilt boat. One of the 19' plans I looked at only required 90HP to reach 35mph, which for my purposes is plenty.
I know the deeper the vee hull the higher the power to drive it on plane. Also do not want to break the bank on power for a rebuild.

It all depends on the HULL older makos tend to be real heavy so the HP needed to push a 1980 19 mako is going to be alot different than say a 19 ft carolina skiff
I dont have much experience with the whaler type boats I never much cared for the Hull desighn or the interior layout. Have you thought about maybe a Maritime Skiff or Carolina Skiff You could find an older Hull and Rehab it and a nice used four stroke. There are lots of seating and console options from after-market companies Like BIRDSALL MARINE you could build a killer CC flyfishing boat that way if you had the time and money

Check out the Theft Recovery Sea Pro on e-bay. It's about to reach the end of auction.

MGM,
had not really thought about a maritime because I don't see that many. Will consider though.

Loon When I finally had time to look at the recovery boat the auction was literally minutes from expiring. not enough time for resonable consideration.
Still looking but the wether is going to be in the way.

I am the guy selling the mako 172.

Two points:
1) This is the angler version; there is an extra fish box in the back, which could be converted to live well. This also serves as a platform in the back. Pretty much a perfect inshore boat, but with enough balls to do some offshore stuff. It also has a bigger gas tank 35 gallon.

2) The boat is in pretty good shape. I think it's a great idea to rehab an old boat, but no one really wants to take out a deck, rebuild stringers, and then discover that the transom needs to be redone. And the panels need to be recored. And the center console might as well be redone. My point is that this boat is a pretty good jumping off point.

In case any one is wondering, the response has been pretty luke warm.

I have a very clean 18' SeaCraft for sale - had it under contract this fall, the guy backed out after months of hemming and hawing, so I pulled & winterized her - the boat is in a storage shed in Stamford, CT, looking to sell.
