I'll be visiting Grand Cayman at the end of the month and hope to get in a day's fishing between family fun. Can one fish from shore or do I need to hire a guide? Any guide recommendations? What's the 1/2 day/ full day rate?

Thanks.

Get a guide. I think there is only one on the island that will fly fish. Bonefish and Tarpon are the targeted species. Call ahead and book him

I went to Grand Cayman in June. I stayed at Morritts. I tried to DIY and found the only really fishable spots that you could get to on your own were on the Northwest of the island and the south end heading east, and back around to Rum Point. It takes an entire half day to drive it and its hit or miss. Not much fun for the family. I saw only on snook(!?) who looked lost.

I heard the guide goes to the inside of the bay near Rum Point and you need a boat to get there. There are resident Tarpon at Morritts, but they do like you to fish them during the day.

Good luck, and bring as much liquor you can pack or buy it duty free at your airport. It literally costs double on the island and get cigars at the Cayman airport or you will get raped anyhere else.($58 US on the east end for a fake Cohiba).

I definitely will be bringing the flyrod and intend on DIY fishing. I'll research as much as possible online and also use Google maps to zero in on some areas that look fishy. I might go with a guide on a 1/2 trip depending on cost. I've read you can walk and find fish in the Rum Point area and sometimes even find cruising bones on 7MB, probably very early in the AM before any swimmers get out there.

I've also read that there are baby tarpon in the roadside drainage canals/dykes. I plan on talking to some locals when i get there to see if I can be directed to some specific areas.

My saving grace is that we're also spending 4 days on Little Cayman where I know there will be bones within walking distance and tarpon in Tarpon Lake.

Let me know if you hear anything else about GC.
