So it looks like it's all done or is it?

Didn't we have herring showing in Moriches and east late into Dec a couple years ago when everyone was out for the season?

Maybe I'm just being optimistic.

Last year starting on the 3rd of December there was a massive herring run.

Yes, I think it's safe to say that here on LI we did not have a fall run. So many of us stood on the beach (Robert Moses, etc and west) and saw gannets diving offshore every single morning but the bait and the fish never came close to shore. So, yes, it's done and let's hope our 2008 season is better than this past season for the SHORE fishermen. Boat fishermen this year had a very good year according to their posts. The fish just weren't close enough to shore whether here on LI or where I fish on Marthas Vineyard or on the North Fork of Long Island or in the Shinnecock area. A bad year. An interesting read by John Skinner, Surf Editor, at www.noreast.com as to why we Long Islanders did not experience a fall run. John is an admired accomplished fisherman here on LI and his comments are definitely believeable as to why we had no fish onshore. Definitely a disappointing fall season for us here on Long Island shores.

Fly lines coming off reels, reels going in for service, equipment inspections, organize things, tie some flies, Somerset show etc etc.

I hung it up November 30th.

Happy Holidays to everyone. I enjoy the posts and reports and pics. Thanks to all. Special thanks to Jim Levison: ;)

I'll be online from time to time, looking forward to May. Occassional trout fishing over the winter, but that's probably it.

Peace Brothers!

Hi,

Why are you taking off the fly lines? If I sound like a bonehead my apologies but I never take them off, is it because you are sending your reels away?

Talking about bones, I just uploaded some video from my trip to Nassau a couple of weeks ago flyfishing for da bone feesh.

Yes, as I said, sending in for service. But I also like to clean the lines and store them on a spool that has a larger radius than the reel spool. The I just put them back on when ready to fish.

Cool vid, and yes you are def a bonhead!! lol

Sure we had a Fall run. From boats we did. Perhaps they didn't come to shore too often, but still. There wasn't much of a herring run though.

The Bay Anchovies were thick at Montauk in Sept. and October with lots of bass and albacore on them. Some real big bass were caught there around that time too. A 49 plus pounder was caught from shore at Shagwong (in Oct., I think) That 65 (67?) pounder caught on a porgy from a boat. A 61 pounder snatched on an eel from shore at Turtle Cove the first week of November. I got a 40 pounder on Oct. 12 at Caswells on a surface plug. There were lots of small bass and decent size blues in November out at "The End"as well, with a lot of fish in the NY Bite during December. So I wouldn't call it no Fall run. Oct. and the first few days of November was obviously a big fish time. Even Long Island Sound had a lot of small fish runnig through in November. The later run on the South Shore was different though. That's all. Hey, the Fall Run has been somewhat unpredictable for a lot of years now if you take the entire Northeast region into consideration. The Spring run has become more predictable. What can I say. Put your time in from June to the beginning of November.

Everybody have a Happy New Year. Next year will be great. All those big bass you're going to catch! I hope I'm as lucky.

All My Best,
