Looking for FL Beach Patterns
Guys,
I'm heading down to Clearwater Fl in March and will be fishing the beach. Does anyone have any favorite patterns to match a greenback? Or for that matter any other favs for beach fishing down there? Thanks much.
Steve

And here is my reply. I hope some of you on the West Coast will add to this.

Steve,

I'm on the right coast, not the west, but I have a good friend who fishes the Naples/Ft. Meyers area and we compare notes frequently and, seem to have luck with the same flys.

Our number one fly for Florida saltwater, surf or lagoon is a white Polar Bear Deceiver in 3", 4" and 5". It's a simple all white deceiver tied with either real or fake white polar bear over two matched white schlappen wings. It has a little thin silver flashabou (or substitute) tied in with the PB on each side.

Tie it in Tan, especially for Redfish.

Our second choice, expecially for Trout is a pale yellow Dahlberg Diver in 4" or 5"
Tie it in Black for dark days and night. Great fly for Snook, also.

We find that plastic eyes epoxied on add immensly to the attractiveness of these flys to the fish.

You will probably find, Snook, Tarpon, Trout, Redfish and Jacks in the surf in March.

If you need patterns try Google. If you can't find them send me a PM.

You might want to also post your inquiry on www.boatlessfishing.com (http://www.boatlessfishing.com/) . Post it on whatever county forum Clearwater is in. Or, post it on the flyfishing forum.

Good luck and let us know here, on the Florida forum how you do.

I've fished the Indian Rocks Beach area just south of where you'll be. I tie flies every chance I get. However if I was only allowed to fish one fly it would be a Chartreuse over white clouser.

From the beach and with that fly.... I've caught snook, spanish, jacks, and .... a jogger.

From a boat.......and with ultrahair instead of bucktail for the clouser....I've caught....trout and false albacore.

I don't want to keep you from trying with other flies the wsuggestions above are good ones. As a matter of fact the first few times I loaded up with a suitcase full of flies.

Let us know how you do.
