View Full Version : Sport fishing?
hi guys, i love fishing and currently in florida for a month and half on business. i'll be moving from place to place, mostly stay at a city for a day then moving on. I usually finish my work in 3 hours and take away the driving time, i'll have half a day to do some activities. i dont have any gear with me and stay at hotels so ideally sport fishing with tackle/gear rental would be best! Im currently in Miami but will be going to florida city, ft.lauderdale, naples, west palm beach, tampa, st.petes beach. can anyone recommend any half day/hourly sport fishing adventures at a reasonable price? im traveling buy myself and already found a few private charters, however they're a bit pricey if i am by myself. any help appreciated thanks!!

Glad you are getting a chance to explore the state. Bottom line--guided fishing trips for the average Joe are expensive. I feel like most people probably only partake of guided trips do it once or twice a year.
Here are some ideas I had for you: 1. pony up and by a day or 1/2 day of fishing one time. Research your guide, call other guides in the area and ask them to give you referals--most good guides have websites now days, take advantage of these---if you are thinking of targeting a specific species, make sure now is the right time to go after them--no use of going after fish species if their is a small chance of having a good day. I would ask your guide to recommend a species to target.
2. Try and book your trip early in your stay and pick up as much info from the guide as you can--if you really pay attention, usually a goog guide can give you tips that would take you weeks or months to figure out yourself.
3. Now, for the rest of your trip, rig yourself a pole. I have caught 30" redfish on a 5' shakespere ugly stick and a small shimano real. A similar setup would fit easily in your vehicle and cover most inshore species. Put together a small selection of tackle with the idea of picking up what the guide reccommends later.
The areas that you said you are visiting on your trip are absolutely littered and I mean extrodinarily littered with places to fish directly from shore. State parks, road side canals (especially around and just south of the Naples area) just do some research--you could have a lot of fun just fishing out of your car.
I hope some of this helps--Good Luck--Collard

Just about any coastal town will have guides. But, no good guides are going to be cheap.
Many B&T's rent shore fishing gear down here; especially those on or near fishing piers.
nice. any recommendations to where to start looking? or even a forum more specifically geared towards florida fishing?
or better yet. is anyone going fishing recently and i can tag along? lol
thnx

As I say from time to time, the west coast of FL is the better 'do it yourself/shorebound' coast - especially for light tackle game such as snook, spanish macs, lady fish, etc...although the prizes which can be had on the other coast are better if you care to hire a guides...

Actually, there is plenty of good fishing on the East Coast too - with or without a guide. You have the entire east coast beach complex from St.Augustine to Miami as well as the Indian River Lagoon, Mosquito Lagoon, Banana River and much, much more. If you don't have a boat or a guide, you might want to rent a kayak in just about any coastal town but, there is plenty of public access to the places mentioned. Just go to your nearest fly or tackle shop and ask.
thnx for the advice, im heading east now, gonna be out in naples for a couple then up to st.petes beach then tampa. was gonna go to a drift fishing charter today but went to the everglades instead haha. prolly gonna get an el cheapo setup of tackle and diy the banks as i move along the west coast. i'll definately check out the local tackle shops as i go though.
man i hate how each message needs to be reviewed by the mod before its posted haha
that boatlessfisherman.com looked interesting, but it loks like another random ad site. Is there something good to click on?
