My friend Jim Timmins is here from New Hampshire and we have been fishing the IRL and inshore most of January. Today, we went to the surf for Pompano.
Lo, and behold, what did we both catch but Florida Longnose Gar; a prehistoric fish if ever there was one. I understant that these fishw will go as high as 30 lbs. Off Melbourne beach today, the biggest we caught was about a pound and 13-15 inches long.
What a weird fish ! Skinny, scally, mouth(nose) 1/4 as long as it's body - and they bite too - with really sharp teath. The fish we caught were juveniles as one of my fish books says the Florida Longnose Gar has been recorded to 30 lbs.
Both Jim and I cam off the beach with bleeding fingers. Jim caught his on small jigs and mine took a Sand Flea fished for Pompano.
