Same rod you would use for Salmon, large trout, Stripers...

For steelhead you want a rod that can handle light tipet . It is a nymphing game for the most part so a tip that has enough play to protect your tipet is beter than a stiffer rod used for casting . I use a 10' 8wght when Fishing for Salmon and Steelhead, For strictly steelhead I use a 10' 6 weight and go from , 4X ( aprox 8lb) to 6X (aprox 4lb) November on I use a 10' 6wght. If you try to use your striper gear you will break off allot using these tipets. I would rather go to a 5 weight than a 9weight.

Just my opinion

I use a 10ft 7wt as my all around steelhead rod......all the advantages of a soft tip section are listed in the above post:)-d
