"In 2004, the Committee on the Status of Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) assessed striped bass in Atlantic Canada as a “threatened” species and recommended that it be listed under the Species at Risk Act (SARA). DFO has consulted broadly on the implications of such a listing and consultations are ongoing. No decision has been made with respect to listing striped bass at this time, however as mentioned earlier, the species is protected via restrictions under the Fisheries Act. Strict management measures implemented by DFO more than a decade ago have resulted in increased numbers of striped bass, particularly in the Bay of Fundy."

Let's hope the above message isn't written in a U.S. newspaper in the future.

Might it just be that the increased numbers in Bay of Fundy are a direct result of the very successful restoration of Striped Bass in the US and very high annual spawning index in the Chesapeake? Annual tagging studies of fish from that area list many returns from Fundy. Many A number that has been increasing steadily since the early 1900s.

There is no scientific evidence to show that US Stocks are even mildly in danger of reaching a point where the species would be listed.

The fish going to Canada are in my opinion a direct result of thier "good" management of the forage species. They keep the mid-water trawlers OUT of their inshore waters and in return have had very good success with attracting stripers and giant tuna to thier waters... US should wake up and follow by example.

Agreed!

It's tempting to follow the stripers' example and follow them to Canada. ;)

Better management, no Iraq War or federal sanction of torture and denial of due process, a political system that is not a major spectator sport or source of entertainment, a more intelligently managed economy, a strengthening currency, huge reserves of natural gas and oil, a more accessible healthcare system, far less expensive prescription drugs, and a president who doesn't look and act like Alfred E. Newman.(#$119)

I think the stripers are onto something here.

American common sense, let alone Yankee ingenuity, seems to be a thing of the past.--124-3
