so, its getting close to the time of year when I drag the freshwater boat out to the quabbin in my annual (this will be the 3rd annual) trip to get some salmon.

Im still trying to get my first one.

the mighty Q has always been good to me, during my time at UMASS I spent alot of time out there catching some great smallmouth, largemouth, heck, I got an 8 lb laker by accident smallmouth fishing once, but I just cant seem to get a salmon.

so, anyone got some cant miss techniques to share? Ive tried trolling rapalas, spoons, grey ghost flies, casting the same, in line spinners, just about everything except shiners.

last year a bunch of guys we saw at the ramp did very well trolling shiners, so I may try it this year.

any help is apreciated, thanks guys!!! PM me if you like.

I have also been chasing salmon this winter and have only caught one using a shiner. I have not had any luck catching one with a fly. I did have one swim right by me last month when I was wading. Talk about a tease.

Change your directions to the quabbin, go north on 93 to Winnepesaukee (or any of the other big lakes) and catch one.

My top jig for salmon is a 1/8 ounce jig with a 2" white tube on it. I usually drift and cast, but it slow trolls very effectively too.

Many years ago I fished the Q lots of times and I found one of best ways to get them is to launch at gate 8. use lead core line with a 9 or 10 ft. leader and use the
Mooselook Wobblers. If thay don't hit on one color, try others colors. One more thing. When trolling, troll faster than you would for trout. I hope this --127-3-helps.

We rented boats and fished for bass there 20 years ago when i was a kid. My 5 year old son and i rented a boat there last spring, april i think. My boat is too big. I think it was gate 8, the one near the dam. We fish winni and other NH lakes using steel line and lead core using spoons or streamers. Anyway, last spring we rented the boat and started out of the cove. When we cleared the cove we put the lines out. I use a 50' fluorocarbon leader of 6# test on the steel, leadcore or copper. First salmon was one in about 10 minutes. Caught 3 more and 2 lakers in 2 hours. Got cold and went home. Went back in the fall and got 1 more salmon and laker. I've had the best luck in all lakes using the DB smelt. Orange with black spots, yellow with blacks spots, supervisors or needle smelts streamers. I can't wait to go back in April. We troll pretty fast, 2.5 to 3.5mph. we didn't have to go more than 2 miles from the ramp.
