Not sure how many members here are shad fishermen, but my dad and I have an annual trip to Western MA to fish the CT and Chicopee rivers for shad that serves as our seasonal kickoff. The link below goes to a Stripers Forever alert about some outrageous action by NY DEC, essentially ending the recreational fishery, but allowing commercial gillnets to remain in the Hudson. I hope as many people as possible can send the letter to NY's Gov. and DEC commissioner (and any NY residents should contact their state reps and senators as well).

I've never fished for Shad but do catch Hickory Shad in the Sound. Doesn't matter if you ever have, this is a bad precedent and our voices deserve to be heard before they apply these type of regs for other species.

If the fishery is in that bad shape then the state should close it down like they have done for sturgeon .
Even if the state does shut the whole fishery down that only protects the fish while they are in the river ,which is for a very short time .
Who is going to protect them when they are not in the river?

American Shad are really only vulnerable when the biomass is packed in the river spawning. I have never heard of any being caught at any other time by comms or recs. Wonder where they go the rest of the year?

This is outrageous. I've sent my emails and sent my letters. I hope every conservation minded person on this site does the same.

Shad are taken offshore by trap nets, gillnets, etc. but really not in great numbers.

Interesting. Hickories, American or both, and how far offshore?
