I am looking at an 18' 2000 center console with a 90 Evinrude 2 cycle on it ( not an E Tech) . 250 hrs on the engine. Any comments about the Evinrude in terms of durability, what to watch out for, etc. . I previously been an inboard guy, so if you have any tips on what to look for, test, tips etc. for this model engine, I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

Been using my father in laws whaler instead of my semi gas guzzler a lot for inshore and fresh with same motor a little older. Runs great still w/ @ 500 hrs. Just follow regular maintenance, flush motor after every use. I had one on another boat where the oil injector pump failed at the same time the oil warning buzzer/ my term/ failed at the same time. Not good! Some premix fuel but I have never with the whaler. IMHO it is usually the owner more than the motor ie harsh conditions and minimal care. Good plugs , good oil , good gas and dont thrash it.

My 2001 evinrude 115 ( FICHT) runs excellent - I think same block as the 90 - Ficht on larger engines bankrupted evinrude but my 115 was never a problem pushing my aquasport 200. Appreciably fuel efficient as well.

Good proven design, as the V4s are reputed to be the best of any HP rating with high marks for reliability and longevity. I once had an OMC V4 that was used for 24-years and was running when sold. That said, this one here is NOT a Ficht model which is good. Only concern would have been that OMC farmed out their lower unit gearcases to a 3rd party and didn't inspect them. There were some failures, but predominantly contained to the V6 models and I belief most faiures were infantile and occurred before 100 hours.
Make sure she is pitched properly with the prop, as you should be 200-300 (max) off of MAX RPMs when loaded with typical gear, 2 guys and 1/2 or more fuel. So you need to find out what the factory max RPMs are on that motor.
Try the $12/gallon Penzoil TC-W3 semi-synthetic oil in her, sold @ Wally-World. Decarb her every 50-hours using Seafoam and you should be OK. Here's 'how to' for doing it, click here. (http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zerothread?id=2589)
