Unlike most people, I started my fishing journey fly fishing for striped bass. It all began about 15 years ago. Now that I live in Gloucester, I feel very lucky. This year, however, I want to do some freshwater flyfishing, especially for sunfish. I was wondering if anybody had some advice on when they start feeding.

take a bead head nymph almost any size and strip it around your local pond they'll hit it.

panfish feed pretty steadily year round. they are an easy target through the ice and you can put up some pretty big numbers this time of year. Think low and slow. Sunny days fish the shallows and colder days fish a bit deeper.

The Spring Bluegill spawn is a great time to flyfish for any of the sunfish clan. It usualy takes place mid-April through June in lakes and ponds. The fish will make saucer like spawning beds in the shallows off of beaches or in weed beds. Find the spawning beds and just about any small colorful fly will work. You are catching fish that are defending their territory and will attack any thing that looks menacing.
A great time to teach your kids how to fly fish. The fish are plentiful and relatively easy to catch. They won't get bored.
Even though they are small ( the fish), they are delicious if filited and fried. Don't take too many as these fish are creating future runs.

I was fishing for Pickerel last weekend and getting plenty of bluegills in shallows that had sun.

I couldn't keep em away yesterday on the cape ponds. Bead head hair's ear, not that they're too selective.

I have just moved to Boston from out West. Catching pan fish on the fly sounds like a blast. Any hints on where to go?
