Out on the res yesterday for about 6 hours. Fished Gate 8, Gate 10, the Stillwater basin. Not a bite, didn't see anybody catch anything. (Neither did the DCR guys!).
Typical. Still, this early in the year, it's about the only thing happening. A good excuse to get out of the house for a day.

Started at 10AM throwing metal at the res. Saw a couple of recently stocked BOWS caught. My budy hooked up with something large that threw the 1OZ Croc he was using. From there we strung up the Fly Rods and checked out the stillwater and Quini, running high cold and fast. Had our toons with us so we went to West Waschum pond as it opens the same day as the res. Water was 43-46 depending on where you were. Place has been stocked a couple of times. We saw 2 trout caught the time we were there. Talked to a DCR guy said nothing was going on anywhere.
We ended up throwing bugers at some sunnies and crapies. They saved the day for sure

I am heading out to Marlboro more often with my job and am interested in fishing the Stillwater. I am interested in learning more about it, its hatches and how best to fish the water.
I grew up fishing limestones in PA and have been mostly fishing ponds for trout since coming back to MA. So, any help on flies would be great. I think that I may need to hit the bench for more wets.

It is amazing the height difference of the water from late fall till now. Looks like they did a lot of brushclearing in the basin between the bridges. I liked having a sandy rocky shoreline to fish from in the fall and now it is higher than I have seen in a long time. Probably head down with the kids tomorrow.

my friend and I fished the Quinnie on Sat Morning. Caught 6-8 each in a hour and change. Missed plenty more. All were released, still swimming around (hopefully). The trick was to fish lots of weight.
Yeah, that was another problem. Last fall when I was out there the res was down; plenty of shore space to work over. Now, it's up so high there are very few places you can cast from. Takes away a lot of potential fishing locations.
Has anyone heard of a 17lb. Laker caught at Wachusett?

Saw the Pics of that beast yesterday as well as a 11LB! Nice Salmon pic from this year to. All I have managed is a few stocky bows there so far.
I hear that the 17lb laker was deformed in some way (funny looking head, body)?
I also hear that there 'were' a lot of husky Rainbows stocked in the Stillwater & Quinnie.
