I am trying to get an idera about the water temp at the quabbin to decide whether to fish it for bass this weekend. 55 or better and Im there and should crush smallies.
anyone been there lately that can tell me the water temp? I fish out of the gate where the potapog is ( i think its 35) , but I fish the main lake for smallies. If youve been there lately, or anywhere on the quabin, please let me know what the water temp was.
Thanks!!!

thanks man, much appreciated. that link is pretty cool, if the mean temp of 57 is correct, it should be prime time out there. Im thinking it should be about that time out there for the pre-spawn smallmouth bonanza- with the new GPS for the lake boat, and the nice new navionic hotchart for the lake, it should be a pretty good weekend.
but if anyone has first hand info about the actual water temp, please post it here.
Thanks guys!!

I grew up here, but have never fished the Quabbin ... I'm interested to hear how it goes.
I also have never hit a smallmouth spawn, but keep saying "I need to try that next year".

sweet. what gate did you fish out of and was the fish up shallow or in deeper water?
looks like my sunday trip will be cancelled due to rain and a buddy who thinks 50 degrees and rainy is life threatening weather....

About a dozen or so years back, an old buddy took me out, and we hit the smallie spawn. It was amazing fishing! I never caught that many smallies in my life in one day. Then, on the way back in, he stopped us in a large cove where he suspected some largemouths were still on nests. We each took several bass in the 4-6 lb range in short order before finally calling it a day.
I don't do much freshwater fishing these days, but I really enjoyed that day. Plus, the bald eagle display was the frosting on the cake.

Gate 8
6:30 AM air temp 30*F, be careful the launch slip was covered in ice
less than 30'
no offense but time to look at a new fishin buddy
an eagle nest that looked like a condo
also forgot a 6# laker
think orange with black dots. it's a 60's thing.

I was at quabbin two weekends ago. Had lakers and salmon follow my smally lures but wouldnt hit. Was drifting shiners behind the boat too on the main body with no takers. Gave up after a while and went back towards gate 31 up in the coves and caught some largemouths so the day wouldnt be fishless.
Water was 54º on the main body and low 60ºs back towards gate 31.
The gate with the pog one one side is gate 43.

sweet, thanks mike. tomorrow will be the day for us, out of gate 43, by now the fish should be in full blown pre-spawn, maybe a few on nests. looking forward to it. I'll post s report as to how we do. the Plan is to fish the main lake for smallies, the coves for largemouth, and maybe resplash in the potapog for largemouth later in the day, depnding on how the main lake is.

Sounds good. Let us know how you do. Smallies have been hard to come by from what I have heard thus far.
Goodluck!

yeah, that was our experience as well. the water temp was high 50's everywhere we went, so the temp was perfect. The fish are in prespawn, while some have started spawning. there were nests here and there, but a suprisingly small number of fish around. we ended up with about 7 smallies in 4 hours. threw everything but the kitchen sink and tried a number of patterns in all ther areas I normally fish and do well in. perfect day for spinerbaits, and we got 4 fish on them the rest were caught working 4" grubs and tubes in areas the fish were nesting, but we didnt take fish off nests. we wanted the big females, not the liitle guys on the nests.
the day was aved when we relaunched into the potapog and got a bunch of largemouth- john got a solid 4 lb fish- and too many pickerel to count.
I may head back next weekend, or I may head to a lake in maine that I love to fish for early season smallies. its definatelt on at the quabbin, we just couldnt get the numbers we wanted, just one of those days.
