I got this reel a few years ago... I have not fished it much, but I have caught some big fish on it. The problem is, when I have a big fish on and I reel it sometimes feels like it is seizing. This is my only conventional reel, so it may just be the way they are but I want some opinions. When the fish is pulling hard and I crank, the handle moves, but the spool does not. My spinning reels never feel like this. I took it back to Red Top where I purchased it and they opened it up and said that it looks fine. Is this normal?

Are you running braid on this reel?
One time my reel did the same thing but the spool was spinning! The braid was slipping on the spool, I had to remove all the line and put about 50 yards of mono on first then the braid. Fixed the problem for me.

Hi Jakob,
Go to the Hull Truth.com and then to their sportfishing board. There's a member there who's a reel repair guru named Alantani. Post your question there for him and he'll sort you out. He also has tutorials with really good, close up pictures, of many different makes and models of reels, showing how to tear down, repair, and re-assemble them start to finish. I believe I've seen some for Ambassadeur...
I sorted out my Ambassadeurs years ago. I got rid of every one except my first one, an old 6000 that I was given 45 years ago.... Good luck.

Jacob,
Just like a spinning reel; you should not reel while the fish is taking out line. When you do that, you gain nothing and are reeling against the drag and that is what you feel. You may have your drag set too loose to begin with.

no, I understand that, but that is not the case when this is happening. It is hard to describe, but it feels like the reel should be cranking, and it aint. Drag is set properly.
