sorry about that...technical difficulties. I know I've seen photos of a rod rack mounted on a car hood, with tips extending up over the roof. I'm unable to locate such an item! Before I manufacture one I thought I'd turn to the list.
I've seen the rack at rodmounts.com but the front crossbar on my factory rack is only 4ft from the rear of the car, meaning I'd have to build a cantilever type of arm or extend the tip 5' off the back of the car!
I don't need this for highway travel, just five or ten minutes to the local fishin spot. Every minute I save rigging is a minute more I'm fishin...and I've already broken one rod in a car door.

I've been using a set of ski racks for short term travel.

rubber on top bottom make them adaptable for different typs and sizes of rods from fly rods to heavier surf rods.

tschorer,

I'm a little late to the party in answering your questions but here goes. The racks that mount on the hood are probably the magnetic one that Orvis sells. They work pretty well for short trips.

I own rodmount's racks and maybe this is a stupid suggestion if I didn't understand your problem completely, but what if you put the racks on so the rod tips extend over the hood of the car instead of the rear. I did that and they works just fine. Mount the butt holder on the rear and the tip on the front.

I've seen the rod rack you described at www.feather-craft.com. It's made by Orvis and sells for $110, but I've never seen it used.
