--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been researching fly rods for the past few weeks now and I've got a general idea on what I want but I have one major problem. Testing them out. I've never fly fished before so I don't really know how to cast. Thus I won't be able to tell which rods are better than others. I really don't wanna dump any money into a "dummy" rod then turn around to spend more money on another one so I'm looking for some advice on what anyone else would do in my position.

Also to top it off, I'm living in Hawaii right now which only has one fly shop in the entire state. And even if I could test it out, they only have a parking lot available where I would more than likely tear up my line and have to drop another chunk of change on that.

I'm looking for a 9 foot 9wt. I'll probably use something like a 10ft leader with flys of sizes 2 & 4. Fly line will be a floating tropical with a weight forward taper (9wt). My price range is around $400 or less and I've been checking out the following

-Temple Fork ( TiCrX, Axiom)
-Redington (CPS)
-St. Croix (Legend Ultra)
-Any other suggestions you may have

a really good deal deal on rods and lines other equipment can be founf at

"sierra trading post' , they buy closeout, good manufacturers, quit a bit of equipment. it's perfect for the begineer, you can buy 2 brand name rods at the price of 1 retail. you won't regret purchasing here.

use instructional video by lefty krey for casting.

good luck

They tend to have a good selection of Winstons. Of late some reels by SA and rods/ reel by Albright I can't attest to. Other great stuff as well. Great deals on Sunglasses!

I own TFO, Albright and St. Croix for my 8 - 10 wts. I had a Legend Ultra and now have two Legend Elites. I liked the Ultra a lot but the Elite is a fantastic stick and the only reason why I got the 2nd Elite is because St. Croix has a great trade up program which allows you to pay a reasonable fee to trade up to a better rod, so I took advantage of it. they also have a great breakage program too and I think thier customer service is first class. It's easy to get someone on the phone to take care of any issues. They are proud to be an American made brand.

I would go with the Ultra.
