Use the guides equipment - it will be set up for the conditions he will be taking you to.

headed to a pretty low-frill fishery (isla holbox) which is unlikely to have gear other than a few local fly patterns...

I've got a Tibor Gulfstream loaded with 30lbs backing and a #12 Rio Tarpon line(clear intermediate tip) and a custom built TFO TiCRX 12 wt that I will let go for $700+shipping (or pick-up if you are near Massachusetts). Reel is used, but unregistered. And rod was used on one tarpon trip this spring, no fish. I have the warranty card for the TFO blank. Sweet setup that will handle any tarpon.
