I've narrowed my choices for a new heavy duty 10 weight reel to these two reels. Price about the same.

I have a Bauer M4 and really like it - I guess the only reason I wouldn't buy another Bauer is the question, "are they going to still be around in 15 years?"

The new Orvis Vortex has very similar specs to the Bauer with the one exception of weighing 2oz. more (10 vs 8 - which is a full 25% more in weight). That seems to be significant. Plus side is Orvis customer service is behind the product.

Both have the open cork drags design which I prefer for easy cleaning.

Thoughts please...

I fish with a Bauer M4 they are great reels made in the US, I believe that the Orvis reels are all made in China now that is why they dropped in price.
I have heard of a few problems with the drag in the vortex being not to smooth,I have had my M4 for about 8 years with no problems I would go Bauer.

I was leaning (pretty heavily) towards Bauer. Thanks for eliminating any doubts I had.

Bauer Reels are all made here in the USA ----- Orvis is made overseas --- Drag design and weight are much superior to the Orvis reels ----- Great customer service with a lifetime warranty on all their reels
