Plagued by dogfish? Want to cut their numbers? Eat them. That's right I said it. A guy from South Carolina who frequents a duck hunting website that I use told me how to clean dogs so that they are great to eat. I cought one on Sunday and ate it tonight and it was truly great. At least as good as cod or haddock. Here is the problem with dogs and any shark. They have no urinary tract so they urinate through their skin (nasty) so they need to be cleaned properly. Here's how. Upon catching one, cut off its (hopefully her) head and gut. Then cut off the bellt flaps. Cut into 1 1/2" steaks. Then take your fillet knife and circle off any red meat along with the skin. Then cut the meat off of the bones (cartilage). Get the chunks on ice asap and you are done. I deep fried mine in Luisiana seasoned fish fry. Damn good eats. Great way to thin the herd a little and they taste really great. Trust me and report your results. Don't be afraid!

Fish and chips are what the folks in England use them for, and plenty of em.
But seein as I'm a good Scotsman and we don't much care to follow the English on much of anything.........into my lobster pots they go...... ;)

No big surprise to some here, FB (those that have been around the blue marble a bit in particular, maybe). In the UK it's common to have them as fish and chips. Same thing with skates as far as edibility. Hell, some years back I saw that one of the appetizers at Jasper's White's fish shack was skate wings. Not much out there that swims isn't eaten by some folks, though I'm all set with eating doggies and skates personally. Not because they don't eat OK, because they do (yes, I've had them both), but just not that crazy about the hassle as far as prep.
Jackie, you remember the last time we came upon a doggie together when out for eiders? --123-3 Now that was an interesting first. Note to the waterfowlers: an oz of steel #2s with a tight choke will totally ruin a subsurface doggie's day, despite what the Mythbusters would have you believe. I tried to persuade him to leave the little gummer alone, but noooo... --124-3
Cheers,
L
P.S. As an aside for any that aspire to make a meal of doggies, be *careful* handling them. A few years ago a couple buddies and me were fishing in the bay and getting into some of them. A buddy (TNK, God love ya' son!) of mine decides to grab one at the boat, as I'd been doing. TNK grabs one, and brings it aboard to unhook and release. Not sensing TNK's kind nature, the doggie decides ole TNK is a grave threat, and does the quick 'bend in half and spike this SOB that's trying to eat me' routine. Looked painful and drew a drop of blood or two, but we continued fishing. Ten or 15 minutes later, the wee pinprick on TNK's forearm looked (honest to Kreist) like he was trying to smuggle a racquet ball into port under the skin of his arm. It was ugly, and getting worse. Of course TNK's wife is a nurse, and he made the call to casually ask her to get on the web and see if there was anything to be concerned about. Within minutes, TNK's face got all glum, and 'OK, yes dearing' his lil' southern heart out. ;) It seems that it's possible for some people who have sustained a doggy 'bite' can not only experience severe allergic reactions, but while rare, some also who have sustained a poke and ignored same have gone on to get raging infections of dangerous proportions, and some have lost LIMBS as a result. So, the rule that came into effect that day and still applies on his boat is, doggies are not welcome on board, and are only to be 'released' with the aid of a priest. ;) You have been warned.

L: as always, fine story telling.
While I think I cannot comment on the culinary merrits... I have consumed a fair quantity of fish and chips (with the vinegar of course!) so, maybe I could. Anyways back on topic, my prefered method of thining the dogfish herd is to create my own show. A'la my favorite batsh*t crazy man-baby dressed in a park ranger constume, Kim Jong Il, I like to staff, write and put own my own plays. I like to have what I call the "Cirque du Dogeil". It consists of bailing the little guys, bending them real good so they stay up top and spin around like little smelly Quebecois putting on a show for me. As I sit, sunglasses from 1976 on, Hennessey in hand, expressionless and waiting to be amused.

you sick f$%^. :-%
PERSONALLY, i like to cut off tails, complete with spike, and toss it to a waiting bird. basically... "killing" two (one) bird with one stone, or so the saying goes. literally.
although i've never used the term myself, sometimes you can get a serious cirque de dogeil going on...maybe a dozen or so. kind of impressive. kind of makes you wonder how such an endangered species is so popular!

A hunting buddy of mine told me a story of when he was in the 'Land of all Bad Things' when he lurked in the Central Highlands of Vietnam with the 7th SOS, during one of his three and a half tours as an British SAS trained AF Commando, as part of a MAC V SOG team in the early 70s. Seems he and his Special Forces troopies got 'stuck' behind enemy lines for a couple weeks, and they were forced to fend for themselves as far as sustenance. After they'd run out of howler monkey meat, he and his buddies decided to go 'fishing' in a mountain stream. As they had left their flyfishing gear at home (how thoughtless of them), they decided they needed another method. They had lots of the stuff with them, as it was handy to use in making an impromptu LZ when Charlie and Nathaniel Victor came a-callin; wrap a few yards of the detcord around a few tree bases and attach blasting caps. Pop 'em and voila, here's an LZ. Anyway, they got pretty fond of using detcord to make lunch. String it across a stream, let it sink into a hole, and pop it. Bam. Fresh fish.

Before anyone asks, it has absolutely nothing to do with dogfish, or the thread in general. Call it stream of consciousness. Or an alcohol abuse side effect. Whatever sets your pond on fire...
Out.

After seeing what comes out of the hole after gaffing one I'm all set with consuming dog fish meat. It had the consistency and color of mayo which had been left out in the sun for a couple of days. No thanks.
And it amazes me that a fish which displays awesome power doing the twist and curl when it gets in the boat is such a pu$$y when it comes to giving a good fight in the water.

Dogfish: No closed season, no length limit, no possession limit. Would you like a :-% with your fish???

I'm heading out to Old Scantum tonight so I know for sure that the fishbox will be filled on the way home!

Good on ya Ed. Just be sure to clean them as I've described. The key is getting the skin off ASAP and chill em quick. You won't be dissapointed. And pass the word. Let's get a wave of dogfish consumption rolling. Every dog that you eat saves X? number of macks, herring, and other baitfish. I know I sound crazy. I'm used to it!

Makes me wish we had doggies down here below the Mason/Dixon line - almost.
