View Full Version : canal report***
Ten years ago a report like this wouldn't even rate a mention. But, there are quite a few bass in the canal, albeit most smalls. However, it beats tossing heavy jigs all night into an empty ditch I suppose.
Most of the fish run around 25" (some considerably smaller), with the occasional low keeper mixed in. Unfortunately, heavy plastics, big rods, strong braid and long casts in a running tide are what's needed.
As I said, not exactly high sport, but that's all we got.;)

Maybe this is the start of the push of fish we should have seen in mid-June?! I'm hitting the flats this weekend, they better be there, running out of time this year...

I have been out early every day this week fishing the est end, 4am (I know it's not too early for some but it is) Aside from today, each day was a 20-30 fish morning, home by 7 before the family is awake. No keepers landed but I did get some close. Saw a number of keepers leaving the rocks each day. Lots of surface action towards dawn, birds came in to let you know when it was time to switch to top water. I caught most of my bigger fish on a storm shad. Each day was fish on every cast for the first half hour or so then it slowed to every few casts.
Today, I got there by 4 but the bite didn't start until 5:30, not so much action but bigger fish. Watched a 40" fish landed (and then a wedding ring tumble into the rocks while landing the fish).

Came real close to losing my wedding ring about 8 years ago while fishing, wife found it in 3" of water. We hiked in to a small pond off the Kangamangus in NH, with my 14 mo old daughter on my back for a little action with the brookies, must have come off while stripping line.....Still can't believe she found it, I never felt or heard in come off.

My brother lost a ring in '88 or so at an AC/DC show, and he never found it. But then, he wasn't all that worried about the ring, as it had just pulled his finger off and he had bigger fish to fry at the time...

The ring was found before I needed an excuse;) However, I told the story to my wife anyway and she insisted that I leave the ring home on all future fishing trips (including a return trip this morning) :-% It was the second time I had an issue with it this year (related to a sizable weight loss/hence skinnier fingers - I have to get the ring size adjusted).
As aside, this morning was much slower. I caught two small fish and lost a fairly decent fish while a fellow board member I was with caught a bluefish. It seemed like the window of opportunity was about 15 minutes before it was over.

the fishing last night, that is. Just a couple of bumps. BobG only fared slightly better. Looks like it may be time to do a tide switch to the east (graveyard shift).

Wow, a thumbs-up report from bobg for 25" fish?
I guess that is a sign of the times at the canal these days?
Bill,You neglected to tell everyone about our great white story!

similar results in the ditch last night tossing eels. Fished from sundown till slack with one bump of what i have to assume was a snapper blue (cut eel, but not a true cigar).
ps thanks to whomever i stopped on the bike last night that gave me that hook. saved me a little walk.
