Fishing here on the east end of the north fork has been pretty quiet - at least during the daytime. I've been prowling the beaches from Greenport to Orient Point flogging the water with my fly rod. Nothing but subprime bass - 20 " and less.
Anyone hear about any flyrod opportunities on the south fork?

Just when it seems the quietest, it seems to increase the odds of something happening the next day! Gotta love the fall! Heard rumors that fish have showed in the wash in the Southampton surf - haven't been able to substantiate with anyone I know, but I did fish the back bays last night. Large spearing, in decent numbers and ran into a school of adult bunker in three feet of water. Can't say that I see that too often. Hooked and landed one bass - 30". Made it worth the hike...

After the tide ebbed, I had to throw a fly in the surf, just to say I did it. Gave it 15 minutes, beach was empty due to the wind and rain and I didn't encounter anything with scales.

Nothing to miss in the Southampton surf today - the attached pic is what I drove up to this morning. Didn't even take the rods off the truck...

Just got in from 3 hours of deadsticking clam. A bunch of skates. A guy next to me got two little bass on clam, but he was holding his rod and working hard. I was reading a book. Turned out to be a great afternoon on the beach, weather wise. Minimal surf, strong current to the north, required 8oz to stay straight, but could really get out there today. North wind. A lot of mussels came in with the tide when I left. 3 times I had a hell of a tangle of mussels and old mono. The ocean must be full of it. Water was brown, which is to be expected after a big blow, but tomorrow and Sunday should clean up nicely. A lot birds working the beaches, cleaning it up, but I only saw one small group working bait about 1/4 mile offshore. Water did not seem nearly as cold as last week. I never even put on my gloves.
