Not really a fly fishing report here, but made one last trip for a couple hours yesterday afternoon. Didn't see any blitzes or anything that you could cast a fly to. NW wind was around 12-15, water temps 49. Quickly jigged a bunch of herring and macs at the harbor inlet and then went to the north rips where most activity seemed to be centered. While I've read a few posts that the bass are stacked in the rips, I didn't quite find it like that. I caught two in an hour or so . . . around 29-30" . . . but it was a pick -- not like a hit every drift -- and as far as I could tell, I wasn't doing worse than some of the other boats around me. Not too much fun given the cold and choppy conditions. There just don't seem to be bigger fish around and they just don't seem to be blitzing on the herring.
Also, I saw tonite on the noreast website and elsewhere, that there was a fatality out in the montauk rips this morning. A very well known offshore angler apparently passed away after being swept overboard. A sobering reminder that you need to be careful out there.
