Saw the weather forecast, for Wednesday, light winds and mid 40 temps. Got to water at first light, had fish right away, all schoolies 14" -- 26" landed @ 50 total with a friend, then my new Evinrude E-tec breaks down ( for second time ), at the Varrazanno Bridge on way to Breezy Point. Barely made it back in. Towed boat down to Jersey Shore for MORE warranty repair, the dealer says " sounds like you have water in fuel" I don't think so, but will let everyone know results of E-Tec. If anyone reading this has an Evinrude E-Tec engine, PLEASE respond and let me know if you have had any problems and how many hours on yours, this would be greatly appreciated. By the way the friend I took is a Nutley NJ firefighter, I told him, if I didn't land a fish and got skunked I would WAX the giant ladder truck, had fish in first 3 minutes on water!--127-3- Here's pic of Chris, with a schoolie before engine problems. ( yes I know you shouldn't touch a fish with a glove )

Sorry to hear about your engine troubles - a good friend of mine has the etec on his Polar 21cc, and he has had some trouble with it running rough and even stalling. It is definitely not right yet, and he has not been able to winterize it from the key.

It seems that his trouble started shortly after he got an update for the onboard computer. Not many hours on the motor.

The "water in the fuel" diagnosis sounds like bs. I heard that there's a guys in Perth Amboy who really knows his etecs. I forgot his name, but he is certified by Bombardier and is listed on their website with their icon next to his name.

Good Luck!

Say it ain't so! That thing has given you problems from the start. At least you caught some fish. Get it fixed- heard there's still a few decent striped ones around (although I haven't seen any in a while.) Good luck bro!

went early the day after we meet sat, fished the lighthouse, bridge , and east river no keepers and came in around 12 and was at the dinner and saw you go buy heading to the ramp it was colder than fri.sorry about the motor troubles i have been boating and owning boats for 30 years and would not expect running troubles in under 300 hours like we have had.i think some is too much technolagy for emmissions and power versis weight ratio.I would be happy to have the old 2 stroke gas and go motors i have had in the past. When this engine is right it is great on fuel and has good power and idles clean and quite I think my next engine will be a four stroke I dont know i know the warrantes are good but its lost time for me thats why i buy new every 3 or 4 years i guess this 08 might only last 2 years if i have issues again in the spring. I cant wait to see and also to fish again i think im done this season unless we get a 50 degree day soon.for me it was a good season with some new spots and technichs learned let me know how you make out ...

Here's a report from Irish Flies >>>>fished today 12/6. What a fricken slaughter. Light or no wind. Birds working all day at the VZ. Fished south west of coney in ambrose. There were birds all over the area with fish stacked for nice long drifts. went back to the vz on the way in, birds still up and working. Tons of peanut bunker moving through. Took a novice friend out today that didn't believe the stories I have told about this time of the year. He was shocked by the nonstop action. He alone caught over 125. We had some nicer fish mixed in throughout the day but no keepers.

Now I'm even more depressed with my engine down!--124-3--124-3--124-3

Thousands of Birds, Hundreds of Fishes & One Keeper. Enough said !

The weather & fish finally cooperated. :) We found Bass within minutes of leaving the dock.

First Stop was the Edge of Ambrose Channel Red side 35 -40 feet of water. ¾ mile SW of Norton’s Point. Boated the first bass all of 20 inches at 7:15 AM from there on it was as simple as get a line in the water.
After over an hour of non-stop action moved to Breezy Point hoping to find larger fish but did not & action a Breezy was much slower so back to Ambrose Channel. The Fish once again cooperated & caught so many Bass my back hurt action finally slowed down around 2:00 PM

Biggest problem we had in the morning was keeping fly line from freezing to the deck & keeping your hands warm . 70% of the fish ranged in size from 14-18, Some 22-24 & one lone 29 inch

Heard Reports & saw a couple of Charters take off to Sandy Hooks to chase Tuna but did-not have the tackle on board to deal with them if we were so lucky

All fish taken on a white clouser w/ an oversize eye but the bass would hit anything you threw.

Sea Conditions: Calm, Water Temp: 44 degrees, Water Clarity: Clear as Glass, Wind: Light Variable, Air Temps 29 -35 Degrees

I was out 12/6 and got one keeper outside of Breezy. Lots of birds working and I expected to get loads of schoolies, but nothing doing.

Searching, thanks for the replies!!!! I agree with you 100% Engines run fine when working well, but all these issues are BS!!!!! I didn't need to spend $13,000 and read all the E-TEC BS propaganda and have all this down time!! My old Carb motor was bad on gas. but lasted 14 years 1900 hours with only 3 down times!!!!! Might fish Sunday ( looks like the best day coming ) on a friends boat! I don't have the same gauges as you, so I do NOT have a check engine light!

Sorry to hear about the engine problem. Your Right on the mark had 1992 225HP two stroke Evinrude ran for 12-13 years tons of hours great running motor but a gas hog. Sold it a few years back & it still running 16 years later just plugs, oil, & impellers how can you beat that !

sounds like there are ups and downs with the newer motors. I love my 4 stroke but I kept my old boat too and it's still running strong with an '89 merc black max 135 and a whole lot of holeshot. I still use it for water skiing and my friends are always impressed that it can pick them up so easily.

Love2fish,

Sorry about the nightmare with your motor. From your posts it's obvious how much you love these precious last few weeks of the season.

I've known people who've loved their E-Tecs and people who've been back with multiple problems, both obvious (blown powerhead) and mysterious (kind of like you're experiencing). The big ones seemed to be with issues related to the tech who rigged them (rigging them to burn 100-1 but using the 50-1 oil) etc. Also talked to a few people who had computer issues. On the bright side, most were resolved with a good tech.

I wanted to rig my G20 with a 150 Etec (they were just coming out) but the timeline didn't work out so I went with the Zuke. I'm glad I did, I really loved the motor.

Have you tried posting your issues on one of the dedicated boating forums? Lots of E-tech guys on there
