I have a report of some guys doing a grand tour of the local ponds with everything looking sketchy. A1 maybe fishable along the edges by sunday.
I should be able to swing by there saturday afternoon and will report back.

I may swing by A1 today as well. I was at Hopkinton Res yesterday and there was very little, if any, safe ice there so far.

I drove by the Hop Reservoir and it looked like there was still open ice near the boat ramps. All frozen on the other end but I didn't see anyone on the ice. We skated at Ice house pond in Hopkinton so some of the smaller ponds are probably okay.

Yup your there only if we fish at 3am and have to scramble over treacherous rip rap :D
A1 had a few people near the ramp fishing. I've got bait and will give it a try if there is any safe space left by the time I get there.

I live about 200-300 yds from the back end of Icehouse Pd. Believe it or not, there are some pretty good sized bass in there, but it's tiny, very shallow, and very weedy even in winter.
I never got back to A-1 yesterday, but I imagine it's safe in spots today. We had a another cold night last night.

I made it out to A1 today. 1/2 dozen people from the ramp to the spillway. Ice was about 3.5 to 4 inches thick, but thinner farther from shore. I had two flags but no fish. The group next to me had a total of two fish in the 4 hrs they put in.

I swung by around 12:45 PM, but you must have shown up later. Also checked out Chauncy and Little Chauncy. Both are completely ice covered and there was evidence of people walking on the ice but no one fishing. I think Little Chauncy may be ok, but I'd stay very close to shore at Big Chauncy. There was a lot of broken ice jammed up against the southern shore out to 50 feet offshore, probably from the winds when it was still open water before it refroze.

12:45 You missed me by seconds, I had left for a hot lunch. At the time I was the last to leave. Monday's the last day of break so since I have plenty of bait left, I'll be out there tomorrow morning.
I couldn't make it today myself, so I did the next best thing. I stood in my buddy's -20* walk in freezer, and just closed my eyes and imagined what could have been....--125-3

Thanks for the info, maybe I'll give it a shot this weekend. Gotta find some time between kid's soccer and hoop.

I did manage to get this monday a.m. Bit slippery, had to put on my ice boots just to get to the car and walk the dog.
No one there, not a surprise being a monday, Fished near where I had been yesterday. Thickness of the ice had not changed enough to warrant exploring new ice. Had one flag fairly quickly which yielded a 16" pickeral and then nothing for the rest of the time I spent.

We went back to Ice house pond on Sunday but decided to stay off. People were on it but the ice was leaking a lot of water in several spots. Some had frozen up but others were still wet. I also heard and saw some cracking in one corner of the shoveled area as I walked. While shallow, wasn't worth the risk with the two kids. It definitely felt less safe on Sunday vs. Saturday. We were skating so I have no idea of the thickness.

I made it out to Comet on Sunday for a couple hours. There were a bunch of guys out on the ice but didn't see many flags. I called it quits at 11 am b/c of the brutal wind.
There was about 4 inches of ice, more in some spots.
I guess a couple nice brown trout were pulled from the water on Saturday there but nothing was pulled on Sunday while I was there.

Anyone been on A1 ice or other local waters? Thinking of going out for a bit with the kids on Saturday.

Checked out Winthrop pond in Hollison this morning before running to the bait store. No one on the ice or any signs of recent activity so we decided to cancel our ice fishing trip. With the kids I don't like to be the first one on the ice. Ice looked pretty solid and very smooth for skating. While I wasn't there that early, maybe everyone was still home having coffee. I'll check it out this afternoon and post.

Looking at the forecast, it looks like the glacier will move in for real this week and most ponds will have safe ice (except maybe on the outer Cape) by the weekend.

Did you repeatedly dip your hands in a bucket of ice water too for the full effect?!

After the arctic blast hits, I was thinking about walking out to Stellwagen for some cod.
Safe ice, but uncomfortable temps ahead.

Fishing through the ice in 240 feet of water at Jeffries Ledge for cod/haddock, that would be a kick. You'd need one hell of a tip-up .
