Please help yourself !

ITEM #1

It has been mandated thatby 2010 there be a state or federal salt-water fishing license program inplace.

In the Governor¢sproposed budget, New York State will requireCharter and Party boats to be their agents, collecting license fees from thosefishing with us: $5 daily or $19 annual. The money will go to the ConservationFund, a fresh water fisheries program, NOT FOR SALT WATER programs.

You need to call or e-mail your state congressmen and senators to tellthem that you oppose the governor¢s plan for the state salt-water license butsupport the Marine Resource Advisory Council plan.

ITEM #2

Joe McBride has learned that Congressmen Tim Bishop is arranging ameeting with National Marine Fisheries and the MBCA to change the regulationson stripe bass fishing in the transitory zone (Midway, Sub-buoy and SouthwestLedge)

Here's my take on the federal license from Maine.

At first blush I was all for a Maine saltwater license. As my b
log states, I'm not so certain. Maybe the Feds will do more for us than the state agencies - plus you could use the Federal Registry program to fish in other states that don't have their own program. (I think).

I agree with you about the Federal license being better than each individual state having a license. The states will being looking at it as a money maker and really rake the out of staters over the coals like they do with the freshwater licenses. At least with the Federal license state borders would not be a problem and there would be uniformity in the fee structure considering the money is going to end up somewhere other than helping the marine recreational fishermen. If none of the money, (and they aren't coming cheap) doesn't end up in the Marine district it's a total rape and pillage job as far as Long Island is concerned but that's status quo for government these days, just ask Arnold.

With the National Marine Fisheries Service; you can be sure it will not be spent on freshwater or farming interests. With it going to the states; who knows - Unless NMFS mandates the state shares be used to support marine fisheries.

I missed the federal angle on this before my reply and was responding to the proposed NYS Marine License

Are you guys kidding? I would not be surprised if it wound up in TARP, and eventually become annual bonus dollars to the guys at Merill Lynch now working for Bank America.
