I am sure there are recommendations on the board, but i can't seem to find anything recent. Anyone have any recommendations for a guide on Ambergris?
Not staying at one of the more fishing oriented places but would like to spend a half day or a few half days with a reputable guide, probably seeking bonefish or other fun things that aren't just reef fish that we could easily get in a kayak.

You can book a guide through Ruby's Hotel.

Hey "the Wife"

Ambergris is a small place. There's one little town, with dirt roads, and golf carts, and small hotels, and it caters to tourists. It's all about a couple of things: snorkeling and scuba, river adventures, fishing, and ummm....I dunno T-shirts maybe.

What you want is someone to take you bonefishing for a half day, and that will be in their boat, not a kayak probably. When you get there you will see a jillion signs that advertise that service. Not sure how to sort out ther wheat from the chaff. Haven't been for some time, but you have come to the right place (reel-time).

You might be able to find a guide from the lodge down there (el pescador). Guides are often not exclusively bound to their lodge. Sometimes you can call a lodge and get them to book you a guide even if you are not staying there.

The other response, "ask your hotel", is not bad advice either.

Probably the best way is to keep trolling with people who go there a lot until tou get some names. A guide is kind of expensive, and the difference between minimally passable, and awesome is large.

Wish I could help more (worst case you try a few different ones for half days) good luck.

No Sparky, not a surprise trip. And actually, we have been before and used a guide from where we stayed. He was ok, but only ok. And if I'm going to travel that far, I want more than ok. I'll find something, and if not, hey, it's Belize and my cell phone doesn't work so what more do you need?

BTW, I looked at the El Pescador site and there is a page with links to a whole bunch or recent articles from ff authors who have fished down there.

Maybe those articles or those authors could help you?

good luck,

One of the best that I have found is Abbie Marin of gofishbelize.com

I'll second Abbie as a good independent guide. Fished with him over 5 years ago though. Here he is w/ a nice flats cuda.
