In an earlier post that had gone far astray of what it's title suggested; Seafly asked these questions. Since most folks don't have a clue at all about ASMFC, I'm going to answer him here.
1) Who appoints members to the ASMFC?
2) Are the folks making the appointments accepting political contributions?
3) Does the commercial industry make political contributions with monies derived from selling fish?
4) Does the commercial fishing industry lobby politicians to further their agendas?
1. The director of each state's marine fisheries division serves as a statutory member. The governor appoints one member. The state legislature appoints the third.
2. The governor and legislators may accept contributations.
3. Of course, just as the fishing/conservation groups do
4. Of course, just as the fishing/conservations groups do
The three state Commissioners appoint members of the advisory panel - a member and alternate for recreation. A member and and alternate for those states haveing a com. fishery.
The Tech. committee is comprised of the head Striped bass biologist from each state.
