Last year I bought a Lowrance 330c GPS/Fish Finder. I am told that if I purchase a card or a chip (Navionics or similar) that it will improve the detail of the GPS significantly. Does anyone have any suggestions or reommendations? Any info will be appreciated.

the background chart generally is just a blob is land with blue water and a bouy, lighthouse or two.

i believe all lowrance units use navionics charts so look in your owners manual and see what kind of chart you need. get the chip and put it in, then you should have chart detail close to that of a paper chart plus in most cases additional info like marinas, tides, currents, roads and aerial pics. they're $100-200 and worth it, although you could never pull my c-map max charts away from me!

I have a 522 with the Nautic Path chart. I paid about 100.00 for the chip, the detail is ok but not great, but it fits my needs.

I bought the Navionics Gold chip for my Lowrance 5300C. It was better than what came on the unit, but not really great. I complained to the Lowrance guys at the boat show last year and they said that the free chip you can get from Navionics when you buy the gold chip - The "Fishin Chip" has really great bottom detail, but not necessarily the same navigation detail as the gold chip (eg buoys). I have two problems with this, I can only use one SD card at a time, and I can't remember what I did with the Fishin Chip when I got it . I b*tched to them that the stupid unit has every street in the country on it and its made for a boat! Why can't they put bathymetry charts on it?! Seems like that comes standard on the Garmin units!
