I have a 17 foot flats boat and want to add a leaning post or something to hold onto or lean against so I do not loose my balance. When I was 30 years younger I did not have this problem. All the leaning posts seem so large and cumbersome. Maybe I just need a curved stainless steel back rest on a pedestal or something like that.
I am at a loss

Have you checked out Birdsall Marine? They have a bow mounted leaning post, but maybe it's too big. I bought a seat-back from them and was happy with it. -p

like in the first of tommats pics have whatever you choose built to be easily removable. pop it in when you're fishing and then when you're done take it off.

If you do a search, I posted a photo of my bow rail titled "bow casting rail"

There's a guy in Maine who was making some slick ones-so slick in fact that I made a few using a similar design. They were called bow cages and I'll see if I can find the link. Very nice stuff. Found it! I added a rod holder to the ones I made, but this is the design...

And here's what you can ad to that system. That's my boat in the link above. Great system. I use two at times.

Brian at Fastech in Plymouth does great custom work for a good price as well. I had one made for my Maritime as well but it had two feet that mounted to the deck. I would be a bit wary about a casting rail with only one anchor point.

Hundreds of hours on my single post casting cages with no issues. Some of that time in pretty difficult conditions.

I picked this up this fall, it was made by Kentfab in Marshfield. Four hex bolts to remove it. I need to come up with a cushion and would like to eventually attach a couple rod holders, but I think it should work well.

Is that thing, mounted with just one connection, really strong enough?

Earlier in this thread I note "thousands of hours on the system with no issues. Sometimes in adverse conditions" or something like that. My customers love the Casting Cage. I've been using them on bow and stern for many years now. :):):):)

My bad. If anyone knows of a place in the NY/CT area where I could have a raised railing (not just a post) made for the bow of my center console, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
