I'll be perusing old threads to see if I can find helpful info but I kind of have a specific info request so figured I'd ask. I'm getting married in mid August and we are trying to decide on where/when to honeymoon. We are on our own paying for the wedding and honeymoon so we aren't looking for the ritzy-est place around but still want to have a nice, relaxing memorable trip. We've looked into a few places around Carib but have kind of always come to the planning dead-end that Aug/Sept being prime hurricane season, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to plan such a big trip to that area in that period.

So our questions are:
Would later in the fall, early Oct or Nov, be a better time for storms? I am busy at work the second half of Oct into Nov, but early Oct and later Nov shouldn't be a problem getting away. We'd be ok with bumping the trip til later after the wedding if it would mean a much smaller chance of having hurricane issues.

And are there certain parts of the Carib that wouldn't be in much danger of getting hit by a storm in the Aug/Sept window? She would prefer we go sooner after the wedding than later.

She genuinely enjoys fishing and we probably would like to get out w/ a guide one day and probably fish on our own once or twice DIY, so a location with decent fishing would be a quasi-requisite. Just looking for some thoughts on locations with a decent balance of fishing and stuff for the lady, and thoughts on the hurricane implications. Thanks for checking and sorry for the long post. Here's a pic of her hooked up w/ a jack down in Ascension Bay last April. She can even row a driftboat, I'm a lucky guy :-%.

my 2 cents...
Trying to hedge against a hurricane strike is like trying to predict where the DOW is going to be on August 19th.

The further south you go the less likely it (or at least has been) that you will get directly hit by a 'cane. However, a big strom may not hit you directly but could still screw up your trip.

I would book the trip, realize there is a hurricane risk and buy trip insurance. I've always bought my trip insurance from STA Travel on the internet. Their rates CRUSH everyone else. The mainly cater to students and their advertised rates are for those 35 & under. You will need to call to get rates if over 35. But I know the rates are still good b/c my Dad just bought a policy for a week and it was still 35+% cheaper than other outfits.

Thanks pschwart. Appreciate the suggestion. How does the insurance work with regard to hurricanes/storms? Have you run into that problem before? I mentioned insurance to my fiancee and she was worried about what qualified as a claim against the insurance. If it looks like a hurricane is going to be a problem a few days before the trip, can you cancel your trip and rebook it later without penalty? Is that the idea? Sorry for all the questions but I couldn't really figure this out in my quick check of the STA site. Thanks again.

Every time I go on a "big" trip I buy travel insurance. Don't look at it as throwing away $$, but part of the cost of the trip. Yes, it will cover you for trip cancellation/interuption in the event of a hurricane; here's what the policy says:

“Inclement Weather” means any severe weather condition which delays the scheduled arrival or departure of a Common Carrier.

I can send you a copy of the policy via email if you like...just let me know.

I agree trip ins. is a good idea but you know the old saw, 'an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure'. Don't go bonefishing in Aug./Sept.; it is asking for trouble. Further, It is still great summer weather up here in the north. Go tropical in November, storm risks are reduced, little chance of a northern cold front and it's a fine time of year for dem Bahamian bones. We set up our wedding date for March...believe it or not today, 3/18, is our anniversary...and departed for Belize for the end of March into early April and had a memorable Honeymoon replete with permit on fuzzy crabs.

s+s, the tricky part is the wedding is in mid august and my fiancee is pretty keen on planning a honeymoon sooner than later. So if we can't figure out a trip for the Aug/Sept timeframe that we feel relatively confident won't get ruined by a storm, she'll prefer to go to a less fishing friendly spot rather than wait a couple months. obviously it's the honeymoon so it doesn't have to be premier bonefish destination, but it'd be nice to have a shot at a few one or two days. Doesnt have to be bonefish either, just something to get out and have fun chasing.

Thanks again for the advice guys. Pete, I'll send a PM.
