Hey guys, I have been thinking alot about small stream fishing lately and so I took a chance and bought a 2wt. Gremlin emerald matrix rod. I now find myself in need of a small lightweight reel and line to go with it, any recommendations? I am looking to spend around $40 on the reel and will welcome more expensive model suggestions that I might be able to find on ebay. Thanks.

Shane,
I think most people will tell you it doesn't really matter what you have on there for a reel because the fish you will be catching on a 2 weight won't require much drag. The reel in that case is mostly to hold line. At least that was my thinking when I bought my reel for my 3 weight. I can't remember what brand/model it is, but I think the line cost more than the reel...

What Dub said.

Shane, with a rod that weight, the reel is essentially something which just holds the line. Unless you're looking to spend extra cash you have just laying around, any functional, moderately priced reel should do.
After all, 10" fish don't pull too much drag.;)

The reason I was asking is that I read an article about ultralight fly rigs and the guy said that while most people say the same as you guys about the reels he likes to have a disc drag for when he hooks into the surprise lunker. I guess for the streams I should just get a cheap medalist and keep my #3 and #5 for everything else.

Shane,

I fish a 5 1/2' Two weight Scott Fibertouch on the mountain brooks up here in VT. I use a size 1 Lamson LP1 light. They don't make it any more but you may be able to find one on ebay. that being said, any click pawl reel will do. You want to get a reel light enough to balance the combo. The ross colorado is another reel that comes to mind as well as the older orvis CFOs. I find the medalists to be too heavy for most graphite rods.

I just bought a lamson velocity 1 on ebay for $110 buy it now I didn't see it anywhere else cheaper so I just went for it. I really like my bigger velocity hopefully this one gets the job done. Also if anyone else is looking for one the guy had 38 more in his ebay store.
