Hey guys, so I was reading some recent posts about size of bonefish. I hate to lift bonefish up by the lip on a boga, it must do some serious damage to the muscle and cartilage. As a result, I don't weigh my fish. Attached is my biggest bonefish to date, I'm really not sure how big it was. Any estimates on how many pounds it weighed?

I would say about 7 pounds.
Regardless of weight it's a great catch. Stalking and convincing a Bone to eat a fly is one of the best rushes in fly fishing!

That's a nice fish and a nice shot. Tough to judge the size not knowing what your size is and that it's a close up. What a sweet flat...where are you?

There are conversion charts that you can use to estimate the size of a bonefish if you know the length. I cary a small tape measure and use that.
I would estimate your bonefish at 26" to 28" which would put it between 7 and 9lbs. Very nice fish.

Whenever a bonefish has 'shoulders' like this one it is a good fish regardless of actual weight...though 6 - 7 pounds would be my guesstimate. I sure would be happy to hook its twin next month when I travel to the Bahamas. Finding an adult bonefish feeding on a shallow sandy flat, such as you appear to have been wadding on, is a great experience. It appears to be an ocean-facing flat in the Bahamas; where were you and what fly did you use...oh! and get your Sage's tip section up off the bottom. Seriously, congratulations.

Thanks for the kind words guys, catching a bonefish wading on your own is a thrill. This one ate a size 6 tan raghead crab on an out island in the Bahamas. I have never had a fish take me so deep into the backing! Can't wait to get back on the flats in a few weeks, headed to Long Island. Tight lines -Loren

Very nice fish, I would say 7.5-9 lbs. Great photo set up with the flat in the background. What island?
Where are you going on Long Is? I've fished all over the Bahamas and one of my favorite areas is Deadman's Cay on LI, specifically Greenwich Creek Lodge.

First that is a very nice fish. But realistically that fish is in the 6 1/2 -7 pound range. I would guess that fish is 25-26" in length.
Now maybe it really weighs 10 pounds and I am just jealous cuase we are still getting snow up here in Idaho.--124-3
