planning on renting a cabin somewhere in maine at the end of June. last year i rented on in the rangeley lakes area (mooslookmeguntic lake) and had fun fishing. Im looking to rent a cabin near or on a good river this time. Any suggestions on what river or who i should talk to about renting such a cabin? thanks

your'e so close to good water there, the magelleway is an excellent stream you have several sections to fish as it comes down through rangeley.
The last few years June has seen so much water that downstate rivers flowing into the Androscoggin basin were all but unfishable for most of the month.
The Rapid was over 7000 cfs the week I was there.
The Andro at Ellis had 2 gates WIDE OPEN, that 15' wide - 6' deep of water coming through the dam
My contacts that were even up in GLS found June to be marginal there also because of volume.
I think if you are willing to drive 25-30 mi into the woods from where you are you should find excellent fishing.

You might want to check out the Baxter state Park / West Branch Penobscot region. I used to stay at Frost Pond camps on Frost Pond which is about 3 miles beyond the Chesuncook dam on the West Branch. There's plenty of lakes, ponds and streams in the area. Frost Pond has brookies and the cabins are on or just back from the pond. Baxter state park is a short drive and has good fishing. You can find Frost Pond camps online for information.

I know the area. My buddy has a bear camp up there. +1 on what the other poster said about the Baxter area. Very pretty.

There are several rivers -in Greenville/Moosehead Lake Area - the Roach River in Kokadjo (FFO - catch and release, I believe) , East Outlet (and West Outlet) of the Kennebec, and Moose River, as well as a number of small "remote" ponds which are great for kayak/float-tubing and offer a good alternative if rivers are running rampant. There are a number of sporting camps up there, some of which are right on the rivers.

Depending on how far you want to venture, Grand Lake Stream is a great place to stay. I've stayed that the Stream House for the last 3 years in a row and have had great results battling with Landlock Salmon all week. Link to the site is: http://www.grandlakelodgemaine.com/Stream%20Home.htm Chris and Lindsey are great hosts and can point you in the right direction. Best kept secret on the whole stream is right out your back door between 5:30 - 8:30 each night. All you need is a Cattis fly and you will have a tight line all night!
We go up the first week in June, not sure how the end of the month is, but I would assume with all the snow and cold, the end of the month may be better than the begining.

I think where you were, is the best part of maine if you want good fishing. I'd consider bumping it up a week or. You might be able to find something along the upper strecthes of the megallaway. There is also Lakewood camps, on Richardson Lake, which set at the top of Middle Dam. They have cabins, but provide the three meals in the their lodge. That would limit you to just the rapid, but you'd have access to all three sections if you stayed their.

Thanks everyone. It looks like ive got my spot picked. Im staying on the kennebago river for two weeks at 1200 bucks. The cabin is right on the river and is inbetween the two lakes. My plan is to do a 5 day long canoe trip and then spend the rest of the time at the cabin. Anyone have any good spots for a canoe trip that will last 3-5 days? Looking for some type of small river that has good fishing. The fish dont need to be monsters but just big enough to keep. I want to get the feeling like im surviving in the wilderness, by eating the fish for my only meals and sleeping on the river. Thanks
