I intend to try trolling the Quabbin in April for trout types. I've never been before but I guess boats can be rented for $34 a day. Do they ever run short of boats? How can I find out when ice out is? Any spots for trolling better than others?thanks...ron

I drive into Gate 43 in Hardwick many times each spring prior to and during spring turkey season, and there sure seems to be plenty of boat available.:brow Perhaps they might run out on opening day, but I'd be surprised.
On an unrelated note, if there's a prettier town common than Hardwick Ma and surrounds, I've yet to see it.;)

I used to take my 12' aluminum boat out of Gate 31 and run down to The Pass and usually did quite well. A portable fishfinder is a nice item to have with you if you're renting a boat.

There's some nice fishing near Gate 31, but I believe the best fishing in that area of the state lies not far outside Quabbin's gates.

There always seemed to be plenty of boats at both Gates 31 and 43...

I grew up fishing Quabbin...Gate 8. Back in the 60;s, trolling was wire line and Dave Davis rigs with a lure of live shiner! Fortunately those days are gone thank to better equipment.

First, expect long lines early in the season....cars parked outside the gate long before it opens! Rentals can go fast so be aware. In addition, the wind can blow like the ocean so be careful.

Trolling this area early in the season an be successful along the right shoreline and off the island. Light leadcore line gets you down, with a long mono/floro leader. Any lure that looks like smelt/shiners can work..we used to be successful with Mooselook (sp?) Wobblers. Streamers can also be successful especially for salmon. I also like my LittleJon portable downrigger.

Once the water warms, the lake trout hit the bottom. Be aware the bottom is loaded with rocks and tree roots.

Enjoy

The gate near the dam has very long lines on opening day. We got there 1 hour before gates opened and we were way far back. Took 1 hour to get to ramp to launch. That was faster than I expected, everyone did a good job quickly launching. I bet the rented out all the boats that day.
