I just got back from hitting a couple ponds in the Fal/Mashpee area. In a word, the fishing sux. Lots of sun, wind was n/w, but that was OK since it was at my back. But pretty much like every other day I've been out so far this season, no trout, nor any evidence of trout. I haven't even seen a rise in the last 3 times I've been out.

Hi Bob,
Did you hit John's and Ashumet?

BobG
03-31-2009, 11:56 AM
Johns was one of the ponds I hit.
I'm happy to also report it now appears a second car crashed into the locked gate at the Coast Guard beach. I'm guessing the Mashpee officials who locked the gate would rather have people risk life and limb crashing their cars into a locked heavy iron gate, blocking an unlight road, than have access to the parking lot?(#$119) This most recent crash looks to be pretty significant, and I'm sure the vehicle sustained a lot of damage. I don't understand, that gate's been unlocked for 40 years? Why lock in now?
Plus, Ma F&W will not stock that end of the pond since they are denied access as well.
A lose/lose all around.

Its pretty much a crap shoot in falmouth ponds till mid-April-May its just to cold and the fish always seem to not be there. Every year I try but just end up catching a cold

Sorry its slow going Bob.

I'll give a WMass report tomorrow. I'm heading out shortly to wet a line. The Deerfield is still running pretty high, I'm looking at skinnier water, the South River or the Bear. Water temps are still pretty cool, but there a re a few pools that hopefully will be holding.

I don't understand? I haven't seen a fish rise in over a week. Today was a perfect day, lots of sun, which should have warmed up the surface temps.
Maybe they simply haven't stocked very many trout yet?

Well, according to the Stocking Schedule, they put fish in the ponds you were fishing. What were the water temps?

They don't even have the schedule up for the Conn Valley region yet, just "Stocking will begin the week of March 30th"

Last weekend I was measuring 37 degrees water temp on the outer Cape early in the AM, rising to low 40s around noon. I did see trout rolling occasionally but they wouldn't hit a fly, and only once would they hit hardware. I think it's a function of still cold temps and the fact that stocking got off to a slow start. Once the rising temps and enough biomass of stocked fish hit the right level, you'll suddenly see more action. I've found that to be the case in years past. It's been slow in Metro West too.

The trollers have been doing pretty well, but they can cover a lot more water.

That's the sense I get.....I hit about 5 or 6 of my southern NH early season spots and caught nor saw anything despite being assured by the stocking guys that they were there. I go thru this every year at this time......another week and they'll start slamming anything that moves. IF they've stocked any, it's been only a handful....up here at least.--124-3

I went out on sunday tossing flies for about 3 hours with no strikes. I mainly used wooly buggers and stone flies with out any takers. The water temp was around 42 degrees. When I finally gave up and waded back to the boat ramp there was a guy getting ready to "feed" the fish. He tossed out some fish food and the trout were taking the food right from the surface. I Had just fished there without a strike!

I fished Sunday during the lull in the rain for a couple of hours. My Father and I each got one rainbow on wollybuggers. Water and air were cold.

Just got back from my second fish-less day at Long pond. No one else saw any action either, save for a couple of small perch. The fish feeder was there today as well, but even his mail order fish food couldn't bring em up.

We need a few days of steady warm temperatures to jump start things.

Been there twice, only hour each time with power bait. No hits. Other guys said it was very slow. I know it was just stocked but starting to wonder if they cut back on the amount.

Well, fished for about 2 1/2 hours. Never saw, heard and most certainly didn't catch a single trout. They definitely not stocked the smaller rivers out here yet, although supposedly it is happening this week.

Had fun though. My buddy who went with me snapped this:

That's a nice looking river. I will be trying all kinds of new streams and such this year, do you mind telling me what it's called?

Hit MA pond on last Sunday. Got 5 browns with countless follows. Ice was receeded just enough to fish from shore. Hit the same place yesterday and,saw (2) 7# salmon caught from shore. Nice fish, we got nothing.

South River in Conway, MA. Not at all my favorite place to fish in town, but my buddy forgot his waders and it is one of the few locations where you can cast effectively from the bank.

Evidently, stocking has started up here.....but I haven't seen a fish yet after 2 days of 2 hours fishing 5-6 favorite spots......water temp is ~ 42-43 meaning SLUGGISH fish. Warm weather....please!

I hit a couple ponds in the Falmouth area this afternoon. The first one was pretty well monopolized by the homie, power bait crew. All lined up on the beach, lawn chairs, making lots of noise in the water and on the beach. I used the fifth or sixth rock thrown in the water as my cue to move on.
The other pond had some surface action.:brow A hatch on tiny black flies were popping out of the water, only over the sand. The water my have been a degree or two warmer there, and that stimuated the hatch. A fair number of fish were rising, but I had nothing that small to offer. I did take one real nice rainbow on a wolly bugger.
However, I'm happy to report the ospreys were cleaning house!:brow As I pulled into the pots, one came screaming over my head right over the road with a large rainbow clentched in it's talons. I saw them nail several others in the 2 hours I was there.

I was out last night in Metrowest and caught a couple of stocked rainbow trout. Dropped a few more. Water has warmed up since last time out. It was 50 degrees near the surface. I did see a few fish feed on top but all of mine were caught with woolly buggers from the yak. Time was short and didn't have the energy to switch over to floating line. Feeding was very sporadic anyway.

I was out last night and caught egg-laden kivvers on a wooly bugger. Then a tree caught the last of my wooly buggers, so I need to go on a resupply run. The trout are definitely around, but I need a floating line and strike indicator to get any interest. All I had with me was the sinking line. Next time .

Hardware should work well too now that the water has warmed up.

Yup, launched the float tube for the first time today and did a little better. About 10-12 fish today, mostly brookies with a few rainbows mixed in. They hit and fought much harder than they were in the last week. We even had the sunfish moving a little today which is a sure sign that things are heating up.

LOL, I saw an old guy yesterday at a very well known Wachusett spot make a terrible cast with his push-button rod....he was surprised when he had not 1 but 2 trout on....as it turned out, he caught the guy next to his stringer!

Got a nice 20-22" laker today on a Kasmaster....quite the fighter, even on 10lb. He went back in.
This fish could have easily been caught w/ a fly rod!
In fact, most of the fish there right now could be caught w/ a fly....even better, as it would cut down on your casts, and that is where they are!

Great picture :)! I have yet to see any evidence of any stocking activity on the east branch of the Westfield River yet. I did see 3 full stocking trucks in Pittsfield yesterday.
