New to fly fishing saltwater. Need to know how to rig my rod, and with what. Also, some flies that might work best for Stripers. I will be surf casting/wading if this helps. Not sure about type of line, backing, leader etc..any help appreciated

One thing you can do is use the search feature of this forum to find the answers to many of your questions.

rod 8 or 9 weight,
intermediate line for starters
many use a sinking line if area is deep or good current.
flies, try to match the bait,
unfortuneately I just throw stuff together and avoid the details.

There's an article in On the Water magazine about that topic in the April issue.:-% It's an addictive pasttime be careful!

Here's the basics for a wading fly caster targeting stripers and blues:

#9 - #10 weight graphite fly rod . - I prefer a #9 as it is lighter and more pleasant to fish.

#9 - # 10 weight floating line.
150 - 200 yards of 30# Dacron Backing

25# - 30# Mono Butt section (1 Foot)
9 foot tapered Leader - 12 pound test - 15 pound test
10 - 12 - 15 pound tippet

Flies:
Stripers are usually not that fussy. Streamers or epoxy flies tied on 1/0 - 3/0 will be fine. White, Blue and white, Green and white patterns will do although a few dark flies are also OK. An assortment of 12 flies will do.

Stripping basket is often necessary especially when wading where the current is strong, or their is white water of any type.

That's basically it! Hope this helps.

Good pair of breathable boot foot waiders/ studs if jetty walking
Stripping basket
9wt rod/large arbor reel
30-50lb backing
Maybe interchangable tip line or 3 spare spools with sinking/intermediate/flaoting saltwater striper line
Intermediate line only for tight budget
Deceivers, clousers, sand eel epoxy patterns, and poppers
9ft 20 lb leader i cut down to 6 ft, tie on 30lb micro swivel so I can interchange diffrent tippets and lest line twist. 3 foot tippet -20lb for stripers-50lb for blues/toothy fish

When out wading I ussualy plan to make it a day trip so the following is essential in a comfortable back or sling pack:
Good sling back pack (Orvis):
Large fly box
Head Lamp
Pliers
Bottle Water
Camera
Phone
Extra 20lb Leader
20lb tippet for stripers and 50lb for Blues
Micro swivels between leader and tippet
Smokes /chew optional
lighter
Snack

Great Deals available!

I'll throw this out there:
Check Amazon - search "echo classic"
This is a very good rod, especially for the $$. I have their 10#. 4 piece lifetime warranty - Echo has recently re-done their rod lines and the Classic is being discountinued.

Match the old style Lamson velocity with this and you'll have a great set-up and won't have burned a whole in your pocket.

There's also some sweet Powells for sale on Sierra. Ross reels too.
